Do you have BMW or aftermarket locking bolts?
If they are BMW bolts...look for the code number on one of the locking bolts. You can order a new adapter/key from your local BMW dealership's parts department.

It depends on what type you have. Sometimes you can see the code down at the bottom of the lug bolt. If not, you may be able to get someone at the dealership to go out to your car with the set and do a "Cinderella slipper" to find out which adapter fits your locking lug bolts.
If you're going to be ordering a new key...it gives them "insentive" to find the right one. Do you have this type? This type will sometimes have the key code down inside the locking lug bolt. Or do you have this type"

I just had this issue. Basically I took a picture of the bolt, then flipped it horizontal (mirrored). Then I compared the pattern to a diagram to find the correct code. Once I was confident that I had the correct pattern, I ordered a key on Amazon.
Diagram: View post on imgur.com Just be very careful when applying torque to the socket, as they are a little bit fragile. Turn slowly with a breaker bar and it should work. I was able to get all 4 lugs out with the key. At that point I threw away the useless locking lug bolts and replaced them with normal ones. Additionally, your local BMW dealer should have a master set. In my case, the one I needed was missing from the set Good luck! |

You have the type like my first pic above…you need D.
And yes, your local BMW dealership should have a master set to figure out which replacement adapter you would need. Again, I recommend going to the PARTS department (not the service dept)…and hopefully get a parts person that has been there a while or ask for the manager/supervisor of the Parts department. Because they probably have been there long enough to either have seen this situation and/or know where the master set is located or which tech has the set…and would be more amenable to walking out to your vehicle to find the correct adapter that fits your lug bolts.

Good to hear they were able to hook you up.
There is a location below the cargo floor where the tow hook and screwdriver are stored…but sometimes the smaller adapter (like what you use) doesn’t fit securely in that location. The other type of adapter that was pictured above with the various shapes is a bit larger and usually fits securely in that location. If your adapter won’t fit snuggly by turning it like in the pics below…I’d recommend another location where it won’t get lost.

No…BMW has minimalized the tools down to the tow hook and screwdriver.
