The second battery is put in for certain car options. I can't remember which though.

Second battery is optional and was installed with additional options or with 4.4V8 engine.

The second battery is for the electric power steering unit see higher front axel loads, re: AWD models. Since u have a RWD, u wont have a second battery to worry about.

Garage List
My XDrive car also has a single battery 105aH battery. Second batteries were for V8’s and cars with additional tech.

My 2015 X5 xdrive35i has two batteries.

I'll need to search again, but read somewhere that the vehicles with electrically heated catalytic convertors needed the second battery.

I’ve owned two X5d’s a 2014 and 2017. The ‘14 had one battery while the ‘17 has two. Both were identical spec (including rear seat warmers) except with the ‘17 I added rear camera and comfort access.

Seems like there is a threshold for electronic add-ons or combinations that might also play a factor.

As mentioned in the user manual, it is not tied up to the particular option. I don't have active steering but I have two batteries.

You got into a more generic section of TIS. Integral active steering is rear wheel steering which the F15 didn't have. Active steering that you mention is just variable ratio steering and unrelated, nor does it require a 24V circuit.

My 2015 35d has dual batteries. I have almost every option so I assume the extra electrics dictates the battery count.
