Question New iDrive 5.0 worth getting?

I' m looking to get a new X5 xDrive50i. I can get a new 2016 model for over $10K less then the 2017 model. The only difference is the new iDrive system. Should i get the 2017 or the 2016. Is the new iDrive worth getting?
2017 X5 xDrive50i loaded $99K and the 2016 same equipment $85K both brand new...

I mean is it worth waiting a few months until I can get a better deal on the 2017 X5's?

For that big of a difference I would say no navigation system is worth it. For 100K you might as well get the X5M. Mine was 99K since i got it for invoice price.

btw, an idrive retrofit is about $5k USD these days...so, on top of new car depreciation for a 2017, it makes no financial sense to get 2017 just for newer idrive.

You just likely have to wait a bit until parts become available to do a retrofit.

It's not that much better. Different, but nothing worth paying serious money for.

Unless you don't care, it is not worth it.
Because the iDrive5.0 can't do video in motion.
At least by coding.

OP is from Canada... 2017 base CAD is 82k, 90k 109k for X5 50i, x5 50i msport, M5 respectively.... not sure if OP can get loaded x5M for $100k Cad... I paid $90k for 2014 50i.... If I could get a loaded x5m for 100k, it would be a treat.... anyhow, the spread between 2016 and 2017 seems excessive to justify 2017.

What about the resale value when it comes to sell it down the road? Not sure the exact difference. Most likely it would be less than 10k difference for 1 year apart I guess.

I like the new idrive, a lot but not worth 10k. In this situation (yours) would get a 2016 X5M for the price you can afford.

How much would a retrofit be if all you want is the infotainment system put in the '15. I assume it has been done already, and a way to get the best of both worlds

Not really a fair comparison of discounted X5M vs. MSRP 50i. I am sure he would not pay sticker on the X5 so the difference between the two would still be slightly more than negligible in addition to any options one would want on an X5M that would be on the fully loaded 50i. Heavily optioned X5M MSRP was around $116k.

I have no idea what the current programs are offering on either vehicle but hey if someone has an extra $16k to spend + taxes on an X5M by all means they should do it. That vehicle is worth every penny in my opinion.

Considering MY2018 (Still current gen) are just around the corner, I would think once you drive that '16 off the lot it is going to take a huge hit on resale value. $10k won't even put a dent in that and you will be hard pressed to catch up. I bought a 2015 in July of '15 and still regret it from that perspective.

buying any X5 new (or any luxury SUVs), you'll take a massive hit, even with the standard 5%-10% MSRP discount.

Hell, buying even a used X5 during years 3-4 will also take a huge hit. The only BMW I'm aware that doesn't take much of a hit are M3s. That's all. Luxury SUVs are money pits from a depreciation perspective. They all have a 45%-50% ACTUAL residual from MSRP after 3 years. I'll never buy a new one.

My next SUV after this X5 will be likely a 2016 X5 40e or a 2016 Porsche Cayenne SEH. Probably won't buy until year 2018 at the earliest, more likely I'll buy around 2019-2020.

My car being the shop two times recently, I had loaners all with the new iDrive 5 interface.

What I have to say it does seem faster and the touch screen is nice to have. They reordered some of the functions, to where it would make sense. Screen also seems higher resolution?

What I didn't like, what really bothered me with the traffic info on the navigation map screen. I could see the roads alright, but now the color for traffic is this very thin like whereas on my car it's very clear which road is congested or not. Also some of the menus like satellite radio although now very clear, also means it's harder to go through the list.

Of course I imagine all this making it bigger is to help with the touch screen, but makes it harder to use with the iDrive wheel.

Anyways there are many pros and cons, but what you want (if you even have the choice).

This... most BMW's are cheap used, and any potential Honda or Toyota buyer could own a used one.

idrive update isn't going to help depreciation. the change is negligible to most buyers. i don't think anyone cross-shopping a 16 is going to jump out of bed and run to the dealership because now there is carplay and a new font.
