What to do

So the X5 only needs to 100 more miles to get to 1200 and I'm thinking if I should take it to the dealer for an oil change by making an appointment (will they charge me?) or should I just do it on my own
Been looking forward to this moment
Thanks for the advice

go to the dealer and get it done. not really a big deal or tremendous cost.

Will they charge you? Yes, because it is not part of the maintenance plan.

If you plan to keep the car past 100K miles ( many rarely do ) then if it makes you feel better get it done.. if not then I wouldn't bother..

For comparison, the 7 qts of BMW oil and filter with BMWCCA discount is almost $70 and my dealer will change it for $120, sometimes $100 when they have a deal going, so it is only $30 or $50 for them to do it over you doing it yourself.

Some dealers charge a lot more than $100, so I always do it myself.

Anyways, $100 will get me 12 L of BMW oil plus a filter. And if I go the Mobil 1 route, I can get two oil changes for that same $100.

That said, whatever route you go, I recommend the initial change. It's simply cheap insurance.

Do what you feel is best for you. It cannot hurt, but completely unnecessary.

I've had several M and non-M BMW's since new. All 4 (2 each) over 150k on the clock, not a single one did I follow the break in period. M or non-M. Of course non-M's have no such period.

The M's I did do the 1,200 mile oil service... But no regard for the "limit RPM's-No WOT, ect"..Not a single engine related problem ever.

What's more important is just changing the oil every 5-7k...consistently. IMHO.
