Some might recommend the full size version. The bigger one has about twice the amp capacity so will charge a weak battery to full charge in half the time the smaller one will. But for topping off the battery and keeping it topped off, like if you leave it plugged in overnight, or longer, the smaller size works fine for me.

Weekly s/b ok. Sometimes I leave it for days, no issues noted.

for 50i, dealer replaced ONE battery Eastpenny AGM, 61-21-2-353-812.

Mystic Blue is one step a head of me as I only have one.

I have the same situation and my car doesn't meet condition #1 listed in SIB.

Can we still ask dealer to replace the battery as precautionary measure now?

Car is not due for oil service for next 7K.

My 2015 X5 35d had 2nd oil service recently at about 18,000 miles. I understand from this SIB and showed it to the dealer, the battery needs to be changed every other oil service regardless what key reader says to change the battery or not. But, my local BMW dealer wouldn't do it without key reader shows to do it.
Does anybody have similar experience with their dealers not following the SIB? How can we convince the dealer to do it?

Mine was changed at 19k service 2nd oil change....long coasting trips is the best thing for these batteries I was told. When you see the little blue pop up on the tach near the battery symbol you are charging it

BMW are just replacing them as a precaution since many low daily mileage cars arnt getting their batteries charged enough and batteries dont like that.

If you drive enough or charge your battery weekly there is no reason to replace it at that interval when out of warranty.

Looks like mine will get replaced. Might drive 500 miles a month and are
around town trips.

I have two batteries as well. anyone know why there are 2? ive never seen this. assume one is for active regen or something?

2nd smaller battery is for back up since the X5 has such much electronic stuff to power. Imagine all the things that would not work without electricity in the car. You couldn't even get it out of gear, your soft close doors would not work (just kidding), etc. The huge battery is the main battery.

My dealer is saying its vin specific and my key didn't show it as needed. Had my second oil change last week st 18k miles. I'll see what happens at #3 and push from there.

Someone in this forum kindly posted the technical bulletin. I read it. If you have a 90Ah battery, you need the ISTA computer to register the 105Ah battery. In the technical bulletin, if you are replacing a battery with a battery of the same capacity, you tell the ISTA computer to change nothing.

On that note, I have an X3, and I changed it's battery with a higher capacity battery, and I didn't use a dealer to do it. I changed it myself, and the car works. Yes, I understand there are risks involved, and going to the dealer reduces your risk. I am telling you right now that I risked doing the battery change myself on my X3, with a non-BMW battery, in fact I swopped a lead-acid plated 90Ah with a Walmart Everstart 105Ah AGM, and the car didn't send me an error, and hasn't in two years since.

My X5 came out of the CPO program, so it will have already had the battery upgraded and the change registered. When my X5 battery dies, I will go get exactly the same specs in an aftermarket battery and I will change it myself. I accept the risk. In my case, they would have told the ISTA computer to not make any changes, so I don't see the value in having the additional sophistication of ISTA.

Then prepare to get another battery in one year as your car will undercharge it and eventually kill it.

I’ve using a battery tender on ten year old batteries and they all work very well to this day. My X5 battery is no different. Hook up a tender once a month, top it up especially if you don’t do a lot of long trips.

Why was this post even made to a 3 year old post? Trolling? Btw ISTA is free and used for many things besides batteries.

Woah... didn't know about this but not sure if the SIB applies to me. I've got my '16 F15 50i going in on wednesday for some general rattling issues. Is this something I could ask them to look into or will they do so automatically? I have the service history (i bought it off lease) and the battery has never been replaced.

Ya but that's when someone asks a question too something that's already been answered. I'm asking what's the purpose of the post to a topic that's three years old and essentially a moot point. That's all. Just curious if there was a point.

The battery is "usually" replaced every other oil change. If your out of service warranty then they won't do it regardless of the SIB for free. There's nothing wrong with the batteries if they're maintained as Discussed here in this thread. Recommend you peruse through it. Lots of good info. Cheers.
