A/C Useless

Anyone else feel like the a/c on the car is useless on hot days? Underwhelmed.

I agree. It makes a lot of noise, but not very powerful.

Mine works fine but I think sometimes it feels hot around the upper portion of the windshield where the driver's forehead is. It seems that the fan cannot reach that area. It's a large cabin after all.

That's what I'm talking about. No matter how I position the vents, it can't seem to reach the head area; whereas my other cars can (including a minivan). At the same time, the AC howls like an Arctic blizzard.

Exactly!!! And then the fan is just wheezing and not really getting the cabin cool. And funny thing about the head liner, it's where your head is. The prior version X5 was MUCH better. Those center vents could really chill the car!

I will probably mention when I take it in for the RECALL...and expect to get a "ops normal" or "it's a black car, sir".

Wondering if anyone has insight into the engineering specs. For example, car heat soaked X minutes in Y degrees ambient temperature should cool the interior to Z degrees in ZZ minutes. Then we could really measure some performance and not have it be a matter of opinion.

I have white vehicle and it feels
Hot... But I notice it cools pretty quick... I have 4zone climate and it works amazing.. Sometimes when it's really hot I turn of the back cooling so the front can cool faster. I never have anyone on the bak seats anyway lol... The headliner does get hot though. I usually have the vents up there too...

I feel the same way about mine. No matter how I adjust the vents it never seems to cool my face/head like previous vehicles. Hands are always chilly. I'm just learning to live with it.

I keep my 4-zone synced to the front so that it circulates cool air through the car. That does seem to help. If I get too uncomfortable I just roll the windows down.

I haven't seen a bulletin for this so I'm assuming it's "as designed". However I am getting a few things replaced in an upcoming service trip and I will bring this up. The parts needing replacement can only be approved by the regional engineering field rep from BMWNA since the car is still in its introductory period. He's a friend so I'm not expecting any issues, but good to let him know regardless as they assemble a global repair profile for the car.

A bit off topic, using bmw connect drive app to "cool" the car prior to entry. That in comb with bmw sun protection up front does make the car feel a lot more comfortable upon entry. A/C works fine with me, I actually prefer A/C not blowing in my forehead.

Have you pressed the a/c button to cycle through low/medium/high output?

I'm curious if having the vehicle on ECO PRO would affect the cooling. I know that some hybrids are affected that way (of course I know the X5 is not a hybrid).

Did you guys have the AC on auto settings? I always set mine on auto, so it adjusted the air flow by itself through the vent needed.
I know that the AC on my F10 and F15 are not as cold as my previous E60.
Also on the E60 I can adjust the air flow strength manually through the iDrive.
I guess I have learned how to live with it.
As far as the noise, I never noticed it since I always hear the wind noise on top of the radio's sound first.

I've never had an issue and almost always have to divert the air away from my face (turn vents out or down) as it's too cold directly on my face. Maybe you guys are taller or something (I'm 5'10), but I've not had any issues. Are you guys using the upper vents only (no floor or windshield) and still have this issue?

I put a ton of highway miles on my F30 last summer commuting to work through July and August and never had any issues with that either.

I feel the same way. AC makes a lot of noise, but not much air comes out.

I have noticed the weak AC as well. Had dealer look into it and was told it was functioning as designed.

I've noticed that if you take it off of auto and put on manual and set fan to high and temp on lowest setting then it feels much colder than leaving on auto and turning to the lowest temp.

Imagineer, when you say that you keep your 4 zone synced to the front, do you just mean that you have the 'sync' button pressed?

Out of interest what parts are you having replaced and why? I assume they will all be under warranty.

No issues here, was on a road trip this past weekend, temps in the mid-80's throughout, cabin was very comfortable. I too have mine synced and always on Auto @ 21 degrees...fan speed is typically right in the middle, or just left of center.

My AC works fine, but as has been noted earlier, when on Auto, the fan does not run at full speed. If you set the fan speed to manual, you can get A LOT more airflow out of the vents.

No issues here either so far. As others have states, make sure you're not in Eco Pro (this mode cuts the power level/fan speed of the AC; so, full blast in this mode is totally different compared to full blast in the other two modes due to efficiency purposes). Again as others have mentioned, turn on "Sync." If this is off, the power/fan speed will also vary depending on whether or not you have 4-zone climate control. If the power level/fan speed for some reason is on or too high in the back vents, that will obviously cut the power level/fan speed of the front A/C vents.

Also, when you put the A/M button to M - this creates a strong interior air recirculation. A is for Auto closing of the outside vents when detecting harmful substances or bad air (who knows how effective this system really is) while M is for Manual meaning the outside air vents are completely shut all the time much like the Classic recirculation button on older vehicles. I've noticed that the power output of the A/C increases when this is on so I always leave it on and only turn it off from time to time when I know the air outside is nice and cool without any manure or other bad smells in the vicinity. Of course, I also turn off the A/C and open my windows for fresh air when it's nicer out, so I'm not constantly recirculating .
