N63TU Injector replacement

Well, looks like at 125k miles my 2016 X5 50i needs new injectors. I’m getting “bank 2 lean” when I give it a healthy amount of throttle.

For those of you who have replaced your injectors, any special tips or tricks? Anything I should look out for? Special tools needed? Possibly an “injector puller” I’ve seen? I know the injector compensation numbers will have to be put in the ECM. .

You sure it’s the injector and not the HPFP?

Hmmm…good call! I guess I wasn’t thinking about that being the possible culprit 🤦‍♂️

Is there a way to test the fuel pump before replacing it?

I did get a “bank 2 lean wide variation” code in addition to just bank 2 lean…would that indicate fuel pump instead?

Lean code may also be caused by intake leak after MAF sensor, or bad MAF. I wouldn't immediately go to HPFP or injectors.

Agreed…checked using smoke and didn’t find anything. I figure at 125k miles it’d be good to refresh the fuel system, although it sucks to be spending even MORE money right after Christmas lol

if you’re able to datalog or watch rail pressure under WOT and it crashes, that would tell you it’s the high pressure fuel pump.

Man, thank you…I am DUMB! I totally forgot about monitoring data, I appreciate you reminding me.

On BimmerLink I was able to find “filtered rail pressure” but it isn’t separated into bank 1 and bank 2. Any suggestions as to what to search for?

I’d have to search myself on BimmerLink tbh. I know on BM3 and MHD we get requested and actual rail pressure measuring blocks. I’ll see what I can dig up on Google.

So far I’ve only been able to find one fuel rail pressure…not separated into different banks. Maybe the sensors combine for one reading? 🤔

Yep, need to get that. My friend has it so I’ll see him and figure out what I can monitor with it. I’m not getting any “fuel rail pressure low” codes so I’m leaning more towards injectors.

injectors are very possible. I believe ISTA can run an injector test but I’m not 100% certain.

There is an extended warranty available for injectors. I had a couple replaced a year ago and cost me nothing at the dealer.

I think that only goes to 120k miles. And I’m replacing them more preventatively vs one being obviously bad.
