Can I lock myself in the X5? (yes, on purpose)

My X5 has proven to be a great tow vehicle pulling my M3 to HPDEs. I am looking to expand its capability by using it to car camp at track events (Save on hotels and don't have to leave the track!). I camped in the car a couple years ago overnight, but was in a very remote wooded area and therefore not too concerned about security.

My question is this: Is is possible to lock the vehicle while inside it, while keeping the key fob inside as well? I want to keep out any unwanted guests; having the ability to keep the windows cracked open too for ventilation would be nice.

Yes. When you’re inside the vehicle…push the central locking button on the driver’s or front passenger door. This will lock all the doors and the tailgate…BUT…will not activate the alarm system…which includes the IMS (interior motion sensor) and TILT sensor.

You can also press the START button once (with foot OFF the brake pedal) and this will give you power to operate the windows or crack open the pano-roof.

If you need to exit the vehicle…all you have to do is pull a door handle to exit. When you get back in…all you need to do is press down on the door lock pin. If you unlock the vehicle electronically using the central lock buttons on the front doors…then you will also unlock the tailgate…which why I recommended once in…just pull on a door handle to exit and all the other doors and tailgate will remain locked…and when you re-enter…simply push down on the door pin and that door will then be locked again.

If for some reason someone does use the remote to lock the vehicle or exit the vehicle and lock it from outside when someone is still inside the cabin…when you see the clown nose illuminate and begin to flash…you have 20 seconds BEFORE the “sound and light show” begins.

The IMS & tilt sensor activate approx 20 seconds after locking the door. After that, if any movement inside the cabin is detected, it will set off the alarm. Thus always use the interior central lock button or the manual door pins on each door if you want to secure yourself inside the vehicle without arming the alarm system.

And FYI…the front doors have an anti-lock out feature that won’t allow you to lock them if they are open. So unless those doors are closed, you cant manually push down their door lock pins, nor can you press the interior central lock buttons, and you also can’t use your remote fob or CA feature to lock the car IF either of those two doors are open. They MUST be closed first.

Outstanding answer. Thank you! I recognize your username from Bimmerforums - I had a thread on there back in 2012 about LS swapping my '01 E39 540i.

BTW...love seeing the MPars used on your 3 series. I'm still rocking my old MPars, too. I have them mounted with dedicated winter tires and use them on my f06 6 series. I didn't mount them this year yet...the weather got warm in Dec and then when it did get cold & snowy...I just didn't feel up to the swap and just been driving the X5.

They don't win any beauty contest on the f06...but they do a heck of a job running the winter setup. Long live the MPar!

Here's a pic of them on my old 2013 f06 (excuse the dirt)...I don't have a pic of them mounted on my 2015 f06. I thought the front's weren't going to fit since they have a 13mm offset...but got lucky and they work without sticking out too far:

M-Par the world! They look so good with a chunky sidewall.
