buying extended warranty from BMW
My standard 4 years/50k miles warranty expires in 2/2018 so I still have some time. I am just wondering how much do you guys get quoted to extend warranty to 7 years/100k miles. IS it worth it? And is there any preferred dealer that we should be working for without much hassle? Thanks.

IMO the extended warranty is a waste of money due to the high cost. Take that $ and set it aside for repairs that would have been covered and I'm guessing that you will be $ ahead. The extended maintenance contract on the other hand is a deal because you are going to use it and the cost is less than what you will pay for all of the covered service.

Many years ago BMW extended warranty were from a third party provider, I paid $2800 for like 2 years and never used it. Nowadays in Canada at least, BMW has factory extended warranty which I would definitely consider. My cousin's 335 was quoted $12000 for some transmission replacement and engine issue after warranty. He ended up trading in the car and took a big loss.

If you have an indy you know or you can do the work yourself post-warranty, it may not be worth it.
If you like going to the dealer who charges $250/hr and wants three hours to replace your bulbs, maybe the warranty will seem more worth it. Just be careful though as some of these extended warranties only cover parts, not labor. I remember paying 10 hours labor on replacing the camshaft bearings on a Mercedes M273. I think the bearings were like $50. |

I paid just over $2,000 CAD (I think, I'll have to check my bill of sale) for the extended warranty package. My rationale there was to cover my ass for any major failures in the powertrain, expensive computer components, adaptive lighting, etc... As a business expense, its a write off for me anyways...cheap piece of mind for me. I do my own service work as well, always have (my X5 just had its last 'free' service to the local dealer - 77K on the odo).

I just helped my father buy an extended warranty for his X3 that is the original warranty is set to expire in a month. The dealer only gave me $250 off a 3y/84k platinum plan. I know it's different than an X5 but maybe warranty pricing is similar. Maybe it's because dealer knows the car is about to go out of warranty so they have leverage.
This is really just to give him a peace of mind that if anything goes wrong he can just go back to the dealer. He's the type who only goes to the dealer (even after my repeated suggestion of finding an indy). Any problem he has with the car will become my problem. |

I had extended warranty for my previous 2011 X5 5.0i, got engine and transfer case replaced, total worth of $16K. Plus lots of small things here and there ( like $500 from dealer). |

The extended warranty is the only add-on I chose. Lots of travelling made the choice an easy one for me. Paid in the mid $2k range for the platinum plan.

huh, 4 years of warranty in NA? we only have 2 years in Kia on the other hand comes with 7 years and lot of asian brands have 5 years.
the question is rather why so many engines and transmissions are being replaced within a few years. for anyone worrying about reliability i wouldnt recommend this car at all and after having my share of issues with a brand new F15 i probably wont be buying BMW again. warranty isnt helping as all the repair shops here are flooded with broken BMWs and cant even take my car in |

Of course BMW has changed time and miles with the 2017s and future years. Should be the other way around, but when the bean-counters start driving the show stuff happens and not always for the better.

My anxiety would be through the roof driving this thing, or any BMW, without some form of warranty. Once I get close to reaching my 4 year, 50K miles mark, it'll either be traded in or I'll keep it and buy an extended warranty.

X5: maintenance: $2,295 warranty: $4,820 Z4: maintenance: $2,095 warranty: $3,230 To be honest, I am not convinced that the extended maintenance plan is worth the cost (but I know many of you disagree with me). My dealer suggested that I wait until just before the factory maintenance and factory warranty expire and then purchase these. His thought was that if I wrecked the car or sold it early, I would be wasting the money on the cost of these items. I agree with him and will wait. |

Not quite. A lot of people actually consider the Gold package, since that's essentially the same as a CPO warranty. So if you have a vehicle that's not CPO, you CPO it yourself for $4,320. I believe these packages all have $750 of margin built into it for the dealer, so if you work it right, you can get it down to $3,570 and up.
