37 deg F - I had to laugh
So, last year was my first with a BMW, then the cold weather hit. First time I got the "it's 37deg F outside" note, I wondered, what the ????
Actually spelled out in the owners manual (don't remember the exact page). Something about "freezing conditions could exist". OK, nice to know Just recently got note again this morning, yes, I know it's 37 deg F outside BUT - last time I checked water freezes at 32 deg F (or zero deg C for the rest of the world). I get it, want to give people warning, but.......... things like this gives us overly anal engineers pause to laugh stupid observation I know, but I found it a bit amusing

It seems silly and has always been a little irritating to me also, but there are reasons for it. As you drive, you can be passing through many different road temperatures, some in the sun, some in the shade, dropping down into a valley or gulch where it is suddenly 2 or 3 or 4 degrees colder. Also, frost can actually form on roadway surfaces when the air temperature is several degrees above freezing. So the thinking goes that there isn't much value in warning you of a situation if you are already in that situation. Not to mention your thermometer might be a degree or two off. Lawyers then take all this stuff into account, and there ya go. Error on the side of caution. But I agree, I would prefer it to warn me at 33 rather than 37.

The 37°F warning is a useful one and you may wish to pay some attention to it.
You may remember cycling at night, you feel amazing temperature variations on your face. Asphalt cools fast (radiates heat) at night and, if no wind, the cooler and heavier air touching it does not mix and sticks to the ground. It's counterintuitive and difficult to believe, but in such conditions you may have a 4-5°F lower temperature from the 10" height of the car's sensor down to the ground, getting road frost - not often so but enough to merit being advised. |

I understand the physics and logic behind the offset, and agree there needs to be a bit of a difference.
I just found it amusing that particular morning.

I thought that odd too that it displays a warning 5 degrees above freezing.
But it is true that bridges freeze earlier then the roads do. Another oddity is when I start up the X5 it displays that I'm due for service in another 8,000 miles
