Remote start rumor

I was looking at a new X5 yesterday and two different sales associates independently told me that sometime in June or so BMW is going to retroactively implement a remote start feature for the X5s. They said that this will apply to 2012 models and later. They said that they don't know if it will involve a new fob, or if it will be implemented on present fobs using some combination of button clicks unique enough to make sure it is not accidentally activated. I asked them how sure they were that this was going to happen and they said positive, the BMW representatives had just visited and told them that this was certain.

These are salespeople, so perhaps they puff, or worse. Anyone else heard about this?

Great news for some, but for me it is a feature I don't really care for.

Hope this is accurate but I highly doubt it.

mattsnow Stupid Question; Remote Start - what is that?
Is it different from Auxiliary Heating?

It's the ability to fully start your car remotely using a key fob from a remote location within the range of the wireless transmitter/receiver in the car. It's great for those that live in very warm and cold cities as it allows you to warm up or cool off the car many minutes before you get in it.

Babs Thanks....you can do this via Connected Drive and the BMW Remote App although probably not to the same degree (NPI) I suspect.

This would be cool if they would integrate it into the iPhone app. But I don't see myself using it. Remote start has been around for 10+ years and even here in Seattle I've been fortunate enough to have my vehicles garaged.

This however would benefit people in cooler or hotter temperatures as stated above. I live where it isn't too hot nor too cold so we just adapt to it every morning.

It would benefit us here in South Texas! It's 104 most of the time and the leather is waiting to roast your skin lol... Also, I have a niece and for the X5 to cool, takes about 10min, it would be great!

It should be somehow coded into the vehicle. Because if they are doing a software update the key needs to be in a proximity and it can work about 50ft away (Personal test...lol) So the hardware is already in our cars.

It might be coding, but it also might be some hardware they add like this that is plug and play: http://flashlogic.com/product/product/product_id/169

Even with keyless go you think it'll still need hardware? I understand the perimeters of hardware required but what if they knew they wanted to do this and something was already in place if the rumor above is true in "Certain build date vehicles"

God I love rumors

I have a lot of doubt that this rumor is true, however I would really, really, really be happy if it was true, I'm going to bump it... Anybody else heard from any other sources that this could become a reality?
There would be two different ways this could go. First, it would just be a function of the key fob and comfort access, in which case it would obviously only work within range of the key fob. Handy, somewhat useful, but somewhat limited. I would take it. But if we're talking about doing it through the BMW Connected app... that would be great.
So, anybody else heard anything about this?

It would be pretty cool if it were to happen, means I could defrost the car in the winter in the morning so it would be all nice and warm and defrosted without having to go outside.

I have to admit I am a bit sceptical about it though but we'll see.
