Changing windshield

Hi guys,
Today I got hit by a small stone while driving and the windshield cracked a little. I will be taking the car to the dealer who is going to change it along with some of the mounting accessories (rubber buffer, some clips, etc.).

Is there anyone who did this already? Is there anything i should look for?

Thanks

I had mine replaced last year. I decided to go to the dealer because I wanted the original glass and I didn't think a replacement glass would be that good with the heads-up display. The only thing I would look for is to make sure your wipers are aligned and don't hit the hood on any of the wipes. I had to return mine twice for an adjustment.

This is what StewartE experienced:

Total of $1,695.23 at a Cincinnati area BMW dealer 3 weeks ago (includes application of an 'insurance discount' of $241.77 and tax of $107.20).

Check carefully when you do your pickup after the service. I needed to have BMW readjust the moldings running down the sides of the windshield to make them flush with the rest of the body and to also clean off small drops of black adhesive.

It's OEM since its a brand new model. No one has replicas lol.

I went to BMW and they changed it, no problems, was well done, except for the top of the glass where there's like a plastic across the windshield, it's messed up, but I'll take it for that soon.

Biggest thing to note for windshield repair is "air leakage" if not sealed correctly. Make sure when you drive it away from the dealer, you test at high speeds with no ac, no music, and just listen very very carefully. If you hear whistling/wind noise seeping through, take it back immediately. This happened to my FX35. The problem when they do not seal it correctly allows moisture to seep through in the cold (fogs up inner windshield quite badly during winters) and air to be heard through the unsealed area when you drive (quite annoying).

opasha is right. I had a winshield replaced before and sure enough there was air leakage when I was driving on the freeway, so I brought it back and had them reseal it.

I'd also add to check for quality of workmanship overall. I had scratched A pillar trim, adhesive residue inside and out, plus they didn't reassemble the cover that houses the camera behind the interior mirror properly. It popped off during hard cornering and almost made me lose control.

Also, check the glass VERY carefully. Mine was replaced twice. The first was due to some scratches and marring during PDI and transport. The second was because the glass itself was defective. I had several specks of dust trapped between the glass and the reflective coating on the inside that makes the HUD visible. They were right in my field of vision. They looked like small air bubbles.

Btw, does anyone know where I can find a diagram of all the parts that go around the windshield? I tried looking up on a few sites, but the best I could get was this:
http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...48&hg=51&fg=05

is that all?

Thanks

I'll get you the full pdf of what they need to do.

Does anyone in the UK have experience of having a windscreen swapped on an F15?

I have picked up a couple of dings in mine in the last couple of weeks, including a substantial bulls eye in the bottom left hand corner. It hasn't cracked yet but looks like it might so I want to check out my options.

We're having our windshield replaced on Thursday (3.5.15) by Safelite. Safelite already offers a non-OEM replacement. We have USAA insurance and are paying $500 (our deductible) for a BMW OEM replacement. The non-OEM, through Safelite is $455, if we brought it to them. $498 if they came to the house. For 2 bucks more, we're going to get the real deal.

BTW, we're @ 14,640 miles. The Colorado winters are brutal on windshields. We had windshields on our Range Rover and LR3 both replaced in the spring of last year.

sssmokie, but did you consider repairing it instead of having it replaced? If the damage is small enough it may make sense to repair. You are in Bulgaria, I guess there is a lot of small but trustworthy busineses around who could do it. Cheap, no hassle, less than an hour work and no wind leak risk .

Hi,
Not sure what you mean by repairing it. its a really small crack, maybe 1 cm x 1 cm.

If it is 1cm x 1 cm than almost certainly it could be repaired. Rapairing a small crack in the glass includes driling gently through the first layer of the glass to clean the cracked area and then applying warmed resin. The resin hardens and glues the cracked area. It is kind of similar to what the dentist does to a bad tooth during the filling . The whole process takes 40 minutes and costs around 40-50 EUR (in Eastern Europe, at least). A small mark may remain on the windshield but it is significantly smaller and gentler than the crack (so makes sense if the crack is not directly in the driver's vision area). The improvement is big and most importantly the glass is glued so the crack will not get bigger with time.

To read more about it and see pictures I found something like here:
http://glasweld.com/windshield-repai...r-windshields/

Hi did you replace your windscreen?, I got a stone hit mine the other day and now its an 18" crack so needs to be replaced As the vehicle is leased they put me in touch with Autoglass who have since told me that after the work I have to go to the dealer and get the camera safety camera reset at my cost, sound familiar or not?. I just a like for like replacement so anything else I should be aware of?. Thanxs. PS - It may be me but these F15 screens seem a bit soft, I have several little dings.
