New to X5...all season recommendations?

Hi all. I've been following the forum for a while now, but just got my hands on a brand-new 2016 X5 last week. The car came with the 20 inch y451 wheels and the summer/performance tires? I live in Wisconsin, so needless to say these tires aren't going to work most of the year. I don't necessarily want to buy a set of winters and go through all the swapping. What do you guys think is the best all season for a balance between performance and snow to put on these 20s? I've seen the continentals and a few other brands. Thanks for any advice in advance!

nice ride.
there is no all season runflat tires available in 20's.
do you have a spare?
the continental dws06 is a great all season tire, but not runflat.

Thanks for the reply. I don't have the spare. Would you recommend it? Think it's necessary if I have the roadside assistance for the first four years anyway?

if you dont have 3rd row seats, you can buy a spare tire kit and place in storage compartment.
yeah, you could always call a tow if you get a flat, but then you're a sitting duck until you can find an open tire shop, and one that will stock a 20 inch tire.

I have the DWS06 on both my X5 and the wife's 335i. Great tire. Rides better than the run flats and quieter as well. I don't have a spare, I got the repair kit from Continental in case of a flat.

I just found the repair kit online. Thanks for the suggestion. Ordered one called the slime kit on Amazon which seems to be the same thing.

Never use the slime kit to fix a tire.
You will damage the tire itself and the TPMS.
The best way to fix a nail or screw is the plug.
A little harder since muscle work required, but you will be able to re-use the tires and 0 chance of damage to the TPMS.

I bought a take-off pair of 18" oem BMW rims....from someone who upgraded to 20" on their X5. I'm happy with the 18" performance during winter. I can't wait another couple weeks for me to throw the 20" back on!!!! I can send you picks to see the difference.

Hi neighbor. Looks like you got that at Umansky. And the house across the street needs a new roof. I have 53K on my OEM Goodyear Eagles all-seasons.

19 inch tires? That's pretty good mileage out of those. Someone with 20 inch runflats would be on their 4th set of tires by then. Lol

That's exactly why I went for non-staggered 19" with all-season tyres.

Buy a spare even if you don't get rid of run flat tires. Roadside assistance does not do anything if you have a blowout.

I had a flat on the interstate in the evening. I was able to drive to a safe area an put on my spare. I was nice to have the run flats and the spare.

Sure only for 50 miles afterwards you'll have to pay, unless you've got AAA.

The point is you are trying to get somewhere, do you want to ruin your trip because you need to be towed to somewhere where they don't have your tire, now you need to wait two days for the shipment to arrive?

I see your point, but how far can you go on the spare anyway?

Not sure of "official" distance, but I've done 400-500 miles at once. Did driving well above the "50 mph" limit on the tire. The tire itself is rated to 130 mph, so I think it's just a legal liability thing. If anything I'd day the donut spare is as good if not better quality then a lot of the stock tires out there.

That run was when I visited Mt Rushmore last year, and hit a truck tire cutting the sidewall somewhere near Sioux Falls. I had to drive all the way to Patrick BMW in Schaumburg, IL as they were the only dealer to have the tire I needed in stock to complete the rest of the journey to New York. Clearly doing that at 50 mph was impractical, hence the faster than "recommend" speed for all those miles.

Even after a couple uses I'd say the tire is still like new, so I'd say it easily lasts the life of the vehicle assuming you take care of it, like keeping the tire pressures checked from time to time, check for cracks, usual tire maintenance. I also balanced mine when I bought it, but it's not necessary.

Great info. Thanks. Did you buy the spare after the fact or did it come with when you bought your car? I thought I read the BMW spare was only 18"... will it ride ok with 20s?

i forget the rim diameter, but the overall tire diameter is the same as the stock tires. that way your awd system is not harmed.
