X5 35i or 50i? Can anybody sell me on the 50?
Was looking for a 35 and Found a loaded 2016 50 (DHP, B&o, executive, active steering, Msport) is it worth the extra$$ in your opinion. I know this depends on the driver/owner - but for those that teetered between the two and went 50 ... how is it going?

I find after almost a year the power when I want it or need it is intoxicating and puts a smile on my face every time. Have had several 35i loaners and there is no comparison if you're ok with the mileage penalty

I drive less then 1000 miles a month - so the difference of 3-4 mpg is not going to add up.
The long term reliability of the V8 is concerning. Have heard this already from several people in the know. Was hoping that by 2016 (3rd year of this version of v8) that issues would be addressed. |

V8 reliability issue hasn't been resolved since the E chassis days. However, chances of having problems is probably low. Some V8 owners have good luck while others are getting rid of them asap.
With that said, if I had to do it again I'd still get the 35i. The price of the 50i with the options that I want is very close to an X5M, so why stop there?? I'd might as well get the M. Now if I was getting a used F15, then it wouldn't really matter to much since a used BMW is cheap compared relative to the original price.

the sell for me was the m-sport.(can you get a 3.5 in msport?).. without the side bolsters I don't know how anyone in an x5 goes around a corner without flying out of the seat.
the power also is very nice. if the price is right I would opt for the 50, but I tend to have a heavy right foot

I have owned both a 35i and 50i......the 50i is faster, but the god awful V8 was a HUGE pain in the ass even under warranty. It was in the shop so many times for the same thing that it drove me crazy. It burns oil like a pig so carry extra oil and the gas is even worse. If you buy a V8, well, you know the gas comes with the territory but the difference between both is crazy. Maybe I was one of the unlucky ones but it has soured me so much that I avoid the V8 platform unless it is an M.
Parts manager told me - "BMW hasn't made any changes to their flawed V8 engineering and thus they throw parts at it all day, until it's off warranty". So if it is off warranty I wouldn't touch it with a 10ft poll, as the typical injector problem was a $5k (cdn) expense. Also, with all the recalls it doesn't exactly scream dependability. All that being said, I feel demasculinized driving the 35i Conclusion - buy the M if not, 35i and mod it. No 50i unless it's a dirt deal Just my opinion based on owning both from new to 150,000 kms |

Miles. Sounds like DHP, Msport and 50 will help make a heavy car better to drive then one would expect. |

this guy sounds like he is just making things up... since the e53 there have been several different versions/revisions of v8 engines. M62TUB44, M62B46, N62B44, N62B48, N63B44O0, N63B44O1(N63TU), S63B44O0, S63B44T2.

Active steering, B&O, Exec, Rear Comfort Seats , Comfort seat front, DHP, Msport, Cold weather, lighting, ACC w stop & go...last but not least Night Vision. (I can actually use night vision - im getting older and my eyes aint what they used to be at night ... Im always on dark two lanes in outer ring burbs. Car deer collisions are very common. Having said that - never had night vision technology in a car and have never hit anything at night. Using build guides on this site - I think the only item it does not have is 3rd row (didnt want), Napa leather seats, rear entertainment (dont want) . Exec includes HUD and leather dash. Wheels are 19" msport w Run flat Pirellis. I hate RFT's but it is what it is... Pick it up in a few days - starting reading the manual online already - maybe better then reading Playboy (a long time ago) I made an assumption that turned out very wrong - I assumed a 2" receiver hitch was plug and play...turns out it is not. How can this be on a SUV? So its easier to mount a hitch on a Honda Accord then an X5?

I dont want an M ride - want quickness but as quiet as possible. Would go with a 40e if I could find a deal on a low mileage well optioned example.

If you want a 50, and can afford it, get a 50
There is always the chance you'll regret getting the 35, but if you get the 50, you'll have nothing to regret (unless your car breaks down all the time Tuning a 35 isnt cheap. If you want MPPK, it's $1200. Want a decent piggyback?its another $600+ There is plenty of power on tap in the V8. Even untuned, it's faster than a tuned 35. It sounds better. v8 grunt suits the sporty SUV well If I could build again, I'd just go for the v8. Last edited by twelve535i; 02-15-2017 at 08:28 PM.. |

the options and the discount alone on that build should sway you to the 50i. if you miss out on that particular one i'll sell you mine.
