Compass Not Working
Anyone had any issues with your compass? Mind just stopped working. Going in for service next week and will let the forum know of what they say. I am in South Korea with a US spec vehicle. More to follow.
Update 1: Just returned from the dealer and they told me that I will need to update my software and will take 8 hours. Well, I didn't have that much time so I told them I would come back. Really, it takes that long for an update? Last edited by nameisjae1; 10-31-2014 at 02:56 AM.. |

Go into your coding. For compass, make sure it is active. If it is, try disabling and re-enabling it.
HU_NBT/3000/COMPASS (set to aktiv). I also read in one of the threads for a different vehicle here: http://f30.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=923020 that there is a pinhole under your rear view mirror that allows the Compass to work in the rear view mirror. Can anyone confirm this? @shawnsheridan suggested this in that thread for the F30, which is fairly new.

The pin hole thing was regarding your rear view mirror. Apparently it's available on the F30 to see the GREEN DIGITAL letters that show your direction. I was just asking about that in general because it was mentioned recently at the end of 2013 in the F30 forums.

I don't understand why they removed the compass from mirror. (I just realized there was a compass on my mirror after 3 years of driving the darn thing, LOL) but that's where it belongs, and nobody should have to go through menus or change display to see the compass, in my opinion.
I wonder if Compass can be coded to be on all the time in HUD?

I agree on compass position . I had 2 E53, and the ergonomics were really very good. Rearview mirror compass display was perfect and concise. The F15 has goofy , almost overwhelming complexity for telling the driver the direction the car is traveling.
On the cluster, BMW makes you decide if you want to display the compass OR other useful data, such as remaining range or MPG. Oddly, they don't even occupy the same place on the cluster, so being able to display both should be an option. Also, the compass function, in order to be displayed, must be selected each time the car is started. On the E53, it was always there and simple to read. The F15 compass , BTW , is too cartoonish for me, and further complicates the simple issue of presenting information. I know about the split screen compass function, but it sure is overkill presentation for the freakin' direction your heading in! |

I completely forgot about this, but isn't there a way to show Compass via the Nav options on the left for MAP screen?

BC button shows an empty compass. I take it in tomorrow and will let you guys know. I am not familiar with coding so going to let the dealer do it. Thanks everyone for your advise.

No solution to getting a compass in the F15 rearview mirror like the E70, right?

I just picked up my X5 today from Soo (BMW Military Sales Korea). After driving for a day, I realized that the compass doesn't show the right direction - when I was driving south, it showed me going north, and when driving east it showed west.

I imagine the compass needs to be recalibrated if you using a US-spec vehicle abroad.

Well, since Magnetic North is not the same as True North, there is perhaps an error in the calculations that would be affected. I know whenever I travel to different countries with my phone, I need to recalibrate the compass or it may show incorrect compass directions, so I imagine it's the same thing on a vehicle.

Be careful in your travels. Try not to make an international incident by landing yourself in North Korea. I doubt the "my compass isn't working" excuse is going to pass muster.

Shawnsheridan was able to assist in unlocking my nav system with the activation code, and it located me in SK, so hopefully the compass will "recalibrate" itself.

Your phone too uses GPS data for correction and I know mine displays true north. If yours displays magnetic north, it must be doing a conversion from true to local magnetic headings. |
