BMW X5 eDrive Plug-In Hybrid Out Testing

COMMENTS

Updated with new spy photos 1/7/14.

The X5 eDrive plug-in hybrid model has now been spotted undergoing testing. These may only be a couple of photos, but we already know what the F15 X5 looks like. We expect the X5 eDrive to launch sometime around late 2014 - early 2015 as the X5 xDrive40e.

As for specs? The X5 eDrive Concept model was unveiled at the Frankfurt auto show last September and featured:

• Four cylinder turbocharged engine (approximately 171 horsepower)
• Paired with electric motor (provides 95 horsepower)
• Up to 70 MPH (120km/h) on electric power alone
• Maximum range of 19 miles (30km) on electric power alone
• 0-62 MPH (100 km/h) in under 7 seconds
• Average fuel consumption in the EU test cycle of 3.8 litres per 100 kilometres (74.3 mpg imp).
• Can be charged from any domestic power socket
• High-voltage battery is mounted in crash-safe position underneath the load area, whose capacity remains virtually unchanged as a result.
• Three driving modes: Intelligent Hybrid Drive; Pure Electric or Save Battery mode.

Halogen headlamps?

That seems a bit of a backwards step, perhaps they are just for this test vehicle.

Halogen? Why BMW insist on keeping the halogen headlamps as standard? They should raise baseprice 1000 Euro higher and put the Xenons as standard. But marketing is the main problem why they want to keep the baseprice as low as possible.

Ha...

So they detuned it from the 240hp unit as found in the other series cars ?

It's a test vehicle?

In the US, no cars except 320/8i and the X3 have halogens.

Presumably because it is designed to work in parallel with the electric motor which will operate over a lower speed range? Peak power numbers tend to be at a relatively high engine speed that the bulk of people won't encounter during regular driving.

SUVs aren't my favorite either, but it is the most "normal" shape of a car where you can shove in the equipment to make it a plug-in hybrid.

A plug-in hybrid is the worst of both worlds in terms of space complexity — you need to essentially include a fully-functional gas car + a fully-functional electric car.

That's why they either turn out to be doorstop-shaped (like the Prius and Volt), or worse (i3, LEAF, etc). I would gladly take the SUV alternative.

Don't believe any of these figures till BMW releases them. Everything is just speculation and mental masterbation to get you excited about something no one has the first clue about lol. I'm sure it will be similar to the x6 hybrid figures but with the 6 cylinder instead.

The diesel (which I love and want one) is not getting anywhere near the MPG that this is supposed to get.

I agree though if its to expensive you waist all the savings right back in.

halogen headlamps are made so that if you were to purchase this car as a service vehicle in Europe such as a police car or ambulance the fleet is more cost effective in initial costs and also from a maintenance standpoint as well.

Plugins aren't marketed for mpg but rather the people who have short commutes and stay at home people who do short errands. And the gas motor is for when you do need to go far without range anxiety. Essentially 2 cars in one, that's not for everyone.

I had a volt, and fully enjoyed it. This x5 would replace my volt nicely, but it should have at least a 40 mi range to make up for the low gas power rating. For now I'm enjoying my 14 2500 6.7 cummins

Another note worth mentioning, my 14 x5 35i is averaging 21 mpg and my wife's 14 mdx is averaging 29.5 mpg. The mdx lacks a turbo and an 8spd and yet it continues to smash the x5 in efficiency and parallels it in performance.... Maybe throwing more money and complicated systems isn't the answer?....

We did! First thing I did when I saw her numbers. My 11 x5 x35i also got 22mpg, for what that's worth.
Seems like the cylinder deactivation really works well.

It's more than just a speculation. It's been pretty much confirmed that it's going to have an N20 engine.

I wrote that before any of this new information came out. However, when I wrote that I was spot on and I won't retract my statement lol. No one knows for sure unless it's official. The advertising clowns like to spin everything in a myriad of tangents.

I really wanted this car as I think a diesel hybrid is an excellent combination. The power output of this car, however, was a disappointment. Audi is coming out with a 3.0 V6 diesel hybrid, that is a better idea. The idea in a diesel hybrid in my opinnion is that you load it every night and do your dd with electricity and use an efficient diesel on the highway. What makes it most appealing is that you can have a very powerful combination engine, when you want it. With this non-powerful engine I think BMW missed the point, because why not just buy a 2.0 diesel if you dont care about the power. It will be so expesive that no one will chose a 2.0 diesel hybrid over a 2.0 diesel, but if it had more power, I would have chosen it over lets say a 40d or 30d.
