I am guessing Stevie Ray Vaughan is not in this category?

I don’t know about just rock, but Buckethead is a better guitarist than everyone mentioned so far.

Paul Gilbert is too.

I wouldn't disagree with any of these listed but I would definitely second Tom Morello. For those that want to be so quick to say Eddie Van Halen (although I am in no way discrediting his talent), go watch some Tom Morello videos and then discuss about how unique out of the box and original Eddie is. Different genres indeed as Eddie plays 80's rock and Tom plays whatever the hell he wants.

Can't believe no one has mentioned Les Paul. Also some notables are Slash, Randy Rhodes, Steve Vai, Yngwie Malmsteen and Zakk Wylde.....also Jerry Cantrell.

Yeah, buckethead is pretty unique--doubt anybody here knows about him. I have seen one of his shows and it does blow you away...but there aren't real songs per se.

Slash is pretty average in comparison to the others on your list.

He’s played with GNR, so most rock enthusiasts should know him.

He has plenty of songs and countless albums.

As with most things, the best is someone few have ever even heard of.

Tommy Tedesco, hands down.

Michael Schenker.

Played his first gig with the Scorpions at age 11 and played on their (highly underrated) Lonesome Crow album at age 16. Listen to this long solo from the song Rock Bottom when he was with UFO. It's was supposed to be cued up to start at the solo but doesn't. 3:28 is where the magic starts. Amazing feel.

Average possibly but his skills are superb. Listen to some of his stuff that isn't done with G n' R. He has a very soulful, bluesy sound.

For me the this isn't just about playing, but also about creating timeless music. When you combine those two I'll put Page above the rest.

Now for personal favorites I have a few I haven't seen listed yet:

Rik Emmett
Lindsey Buckingham
Mike Campbell

I'd add slash to the mix. Though he is from the era of pompous arses, so are the most of us too.
I hope The Entity Known As Lups had a good weekend and spent some fun time with the family.

Any space travel planned for the summer when the kids are out of school?

Yeah. Mike Campbell out of a job for about 3 months then hooking up with Fmac - not a bad deal. Great guitar player.

Slash comes in 2nd, Eddie V 3rd, mostly because he seems to be an ass. Jimmy Page 4th?

Is she disappointed her "space tourism" jaunt is out because SpaceX probably won't make the Falcon Heavy man (or lups) rated?

Absolutely. SRV was an exceptional player. Also, already pointed out by TodmordenLad Gary Moore is pretty damn incredible.

Although not a Rush fan, Alex Lifeson has to be mentioned. If he hadn't died in a plane crash so young, I'm sure Steve Gaines would be in this thread somewhere (as would Randy Rhoads).

And definitely Slash, Santana, Duane Allman, and Jeff Beck.
