Greatest Rock Album

Plenty of great individual songs. How bout entire albums! Where every song needs to be good. Every song should be known...not crap songs that you've learned to like through repetition.

Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (personal fan of the Division Bell)
Led Zeppelin - II or IV
Yes - 90120
Van Halen - 1984
Boston - self titled
The Who - who's next
Prince - Purple Rain (admit it...it's okay)

Post em up...

As far as classic classic rock, it's hard to beat Zeppelin IV... otherwise Wish You Were Here by Pink Floyd

I was up early and the 1994 interpretation/film of the Wall with Roger was on. I had a difficult time keeping the volume low while everyone else was sleeping.

I can sing you, a Capella, every song on The Grand Illusion. Scoff as you might, Styx rocks when they are in concert!

Had Roger doing The Wall on AXS Saturday - I hit record. Oddly, think Waters is better "solo" than Gilmour. Radio KAOS was a great album to listen to - start to finish. Gilmour strays too far from Floyd to enjoy. I think Murder is his only good solo song.

That being said - there's something missing in both of their live tours when they play Floyd songs. Comfortably Numb needs both Waters and Gilmour to sing their parts...

Finally: I was to go see Geoff Tate tonight - he's doing the 30th anniversary of Operation Mindcrime here in Pittsburgh (another great album of all time). Unfortunately with my injury - I needed to give my tickets away to my friends

I don't know that a "greatest" could be defined but some of my favorite albums (meaning being able to listen to it from beginning to end) would include:

Pearl Jam - Ten
Alice in Chains - Jar of Flies and Sap
Led Zeppelin IV
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon (honorable mentions - Ummagumma, Wish You Were Here, Animals, Delicate Sound of Thunder - disc 2......apparently I'm a Pink Floyd fan)
Guns and Roses - Appetite for Destruction (also like Lies)
Any Tool album

Don't shoot me - but I'm not a Sid Barrett fan - I think Gilmour made the band what it is.

I had never given Animals a chance til ~ 20 years ago. Dogs is probably one of my favorite tunes now. If you're older like me, maybe you remember WKRP in Cincinnati - they had a scene about this song and Arthur Carelsson commenting on how nice the dogs were barking... Great TV show of my childhood The Final Cut was big with me in HS - didn't realize til recently that Wright was not on that album...which explains why they never did any songs off that album in the later years.

There's a David Gilmour concert they show from time to time, where he plays some stuff off the last 2 albums.

As already mentioned by some of the other members:
U2 - Joshua Tree
Led Zeppelin - II/III/IV
Pearl Jam - Ten

And I like Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger a lot as well.

I like my Pearl jam but 10 has not aged well, it sounds very over-produced.

I'll agree with your sentiments on Barrett and Gilmore. I do remember WKRP but I was pretty young then and didn't pay much attention to it. I was more into the A-Team, He-Man, etc. Glad you mentioned The Final Cut; love this album and still catch myself on occasion singing Not Now John randomly.

U2 is my favorite band, and my favorite album is actually Achtung Baby. It just speaks to me the most. But if you're putting together a list of greatest albums, it's hard not to include that for which the band is best known.

I've seen them a bunch live, and to this day they are responsible for the greatest moment I've ever experienced in a concert. They had returned for the second North American leg of the Elevation Tour, which began in October of 2001. Needless to say, tensions in America were still running high and emotions were raw. I saw them in Atlanta on November 30, and when the names of every person killed in the 9/11 attacks scrolled up towards heaven on giant screens during "One" as Bono hugged the American flag lining of his leather jacket...there wasn't a dry eye in the arena. I can't imagine what it must have been like in Madison Square Garden when they performed the same song end of October.

I don't know that I'd agree with aging well. I still listen to it on occasion. Takes me back to a particular time in my teens. Excitement of new freedom mixed with some darkness in happenings in that season of my life. Black still brings a tear to my eye almost 30 years later. Just my opinion but Ten was one of the better albums they released. Versus had a few decent songs on it but still maintained their energy, or what I perceived their energy to be at that time. Vitalogy had even fewer decent songs and honestly I stopped buying their cd's after that.

Pretty funny, but accurate. Maynard was quoting in stating, just last week I believe it was, that there will be new music next year. I follow them closely and Danny's drum tracks are finished. Adam is still working from I hear.

Naw - you just sing the first three works to that song - and all the background vocals, you potty mouth.

I hold my statement above on Tool. Was planning to see them when they were in Pittsburgh, but tickets sold out way too fast (and the resell price was astronomical). Wife and daughter caught them (and A Perfect Circle) at ROTR last month...

I fell for it 4 years ago - even fell for it again 2 years ago. I no longer believe.
