Netflix vs. Amazon Prime

I currently have Netflix but to be honest I don’t really watch most of it … maybe their selections are not that good for the most part. They got some decent movies but either they are very old or there are so few of them new that I ended up watching the same ones over and over again.
I am thinking of getting Amazon Prime but will it be just the same but with different titles? Sort of like GM rebadged engineering of old?

I've got both.

The original programming on each is good enough that I'll carry both for the foreseeable future.

I feel like you should get something that has the original programming that you like. The other shows and movies are usually just old stuff or not popular movies. No one is going to give away big popular movies for free. You'll need to "buy" or "rent" it from the service.

If you're not a big consumer of original shows, there is no point to have either of them.

Maybe I'm old school but I find subscription services restricting and just pirate what I like.

I have both + Hulu. I am going to cancel Hulu (again) because I don't see the value in it, particularly with respect to original programming. They do show newer series, but I can get those on demand from satellite.

I have Amazon Prime for shipping and Amazon Prime Video is included so no reason not to use it. I like a couple of their original shows but probably wouldn't subscribe just for it.

Netflix probably has the most and best original programming overall. I might like 1 or 2 out of 10 shows but they seem to make so much there is usually something to watch, combined with older stuff I might want to watch from time to time. Eventually I suspect I will tire of paying for it and get rid of it too.

This may be a stupid question but does Netflix offer any type of "on-demand" service?

Not sure what you mean by that. Everything on Netflix is on demand.

Edit: do you mean pay per view? I don’t think so.

I mean does Netflix have paid per viewing? For example if there is a movie not available on the monthly subscription selection, does it have a service that I can pay to watch?

Not to my knowledge. Apple has movies to rent or buy if you have an Apple TV. Not sure about Roku or others. I think Amazon may let you buy or rent movies too but I have never done so.

I order from Amazon almost weekly. Prime is worth it for the shipping savings ALONE!

Neither. I only use Netflix for stand up specials. I use my buddy's account. I won't pay for it.

I have HBO, Amazon and Netflix. Usually can find something on one of the three. If one of y'all could DM your Netflix logon to me that would be sweet! I'll also mention that some movies that aren't included with prime can be streamed for dirt cheap and sometimes for free if there's a promotion going on. I was able to stream Deadpool for free when the new one came out.

I have both. I mainly watch Amazon Prime, while the kids use Netflix quite a bit.

At some point I expect I'll drop Netflix.

I use netflix more, just have prime for the shipping but if they keep jacking up the annual cost it won't be a good value for me much longer as I am rarely in a rush to get stuff and generally spend >$35 that would get me free shipping anyway.

Both Netflix and Prime have gone up. Also 4K costs extra. Apple has been marketing the Apple TV as no extra charge for 4K but they cost more than 4K on Netflix with 1080p as it is pay per view and pricey at that.

Netflix doesn't have a on-demand service.

Amazon has the ability to buy or rent movies and TV series on demand. In a way it is a hybrid model - it has the free and original content like Netflix, but also the on demand purchase ability like Apple/Google.

If you are into purchasing content, also consider VUDU. They have competitive pricing on digital purchasing.

One thing that sucks is that the 4K content is super compressed. If you have a large 4K TV, you will see the compression artifacts. The best 4K movie content available is still with physical UHD 4K discs.

Good to know. I'm sticking with my 1080p TV for a few more years yet.

Agreed - But Planet Earth 2 in 4K makes the new TV worth it by itself!

Same was said with Planet Earth when 1080p TVs first came out!

You owe yourself to pick it up on 4K Ultra HD Bluray disc and a UHD player. Way better quality than streaming.

I have both and feel Amazon has more original content I like. Netflix has more movies I never bothered to watch when they were first released.

I have pretty much stopped going to the movie theater and rent/buy movies from Vudu since a lot of them now are 4K/UHD/Atmos.
