The 35i and its tranny (100k+ miles)
What's the scoop for the trans in the 35i...?
I've read that it should and that it shouldn't have a flush... I've also read where people have had issues only AFTER servicing it... What say you guys that have been driving these things for years...? Also what kinds of things would give you pause for concern with the trans...? |

It's a zf trans used by many other manufacturers.
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ZF_8HP_transmission Definitely don't ignore the fluid. Not sure if there's a proper flush procedure. Usually drain, remove/replace the pan/filter, then refill. Most common issue I hear of is people not refilling properly. Engine has to be running when you top off the fluid. Search and you'll find diy threads. |

X3 35i owner here with 167,000 km on the odometer. I've had my fluid fully flushed twice... once at 80,000 km and then again at 163,000 km. Independent shop that specializes in German Cars does it and they use fluid that meets the ZF 8HP spec but is not ZF fluid. The transmission is healthy and shifts very well and shows no metal at all in the fluid.
The myths about having issues post servicing are just that. Myths. As long as the right procedures and specs are followed, you should do it if you want to keep the transmission running a long time. ZF themselves recommend fluid change between 80,000 km and 100,000 km depending on service conditions. |
