A/C always on at start

Just bought an F86. The A/C is always on at start, even though if I had it off when I last shut the car off. If I try to shut the A/C, it won't let me until the engine has been running for a few seconds.

Is this normal?

Yep. You can use BimmerCode to code it so the system defaults to the last setting when the car was turned off

Weird - is this just an F series thing? My E92 doesn’t do this.

Not sure which series have it, or when it started. Just know that when I got my 2016 last year it frustrated the hell out of me lol

That is weird. Mine stays on or off depending on where it was last. I've never had the car coded.

That is the usual operating parameter of BMW’s IHKA (auto climate system) for decades. The ones that had the IHKR (manual system w/dials)…when the AC was turned off…it stayed off. But the IHKA systems turn themselves back on if you turned them off and then didn’t come back to the vehicle within 15-16 minutes (the consumer cut-off time interval).

If you want the system to still be off…the normal operating parameters is to simply PRESS the << fan speed button ONCE and the system turns off again.

Now with Bimmercode and other coding apps/software, you can change how the system operates.

The a/c doggedly always on is rooted in clear visibility and decreased drowsiness. In much of the US, much of the driver-rich part of the world, there is enough humidity that rainy days or cool mornings make humidity reduction the best way to clear windshield and side windows quickest. Higher humidity makes you more likely to be drowsy. It is a feather in your cap to be able to say you provide a safe driving environment or to not be called out for not doing it. I'm in TX, I want a/c, most months of the year, to have the car cooling when I walk within 25 feet of it. Variable displacement compressors make the HP loss-mpg penalty negligible so much of the time.
