Arrow X5 25D reviews?

Hi All,

I haven't seen many reviews or opinions on the 25D model. I saw one member posting on the MPG thread but was wondering if anyone wants to write further information on the motor, drivability, comfort, etc....

Also, for the ones that bought it, perhaps sharing some pictures?

Mine is arriving in a couple of months but I have never driven it.

Cheers

I've never found a press review where they've actually driven a 25D. They always mention the 25D but then go on to say the one they drove was the 30D. Mine is due in a couple of weeks but hopefully someone will review before that.

25d Msport

Took delivery of the car 2 weeks ago (14 reg)and so far I am very pleased with it. I have driven a Q5 for the last 4 years and since new I never had one problem with it, but when I saw the new X5 I knew it was time for a change.

I like the cars exterior but love the interior. I went for the following:

Msport
Comfort front seats
Heated front seats
Reversing camera
Alpine White
Black Dakota Leather
Brushed aluminium
Connected drive services
Sun protection glass
Fully electric tow bar (love this)

I do about 30,000 miles a year so bought the car for comfort on the motorway and it really is comfortable. The drive is smooth with the 8 speed box and engine noise is minimal. There is a bit of wind noise but no where near as much as the Q5 had.

I have been fairly light with the right foot for the last 2 weeks but gave it a bit of thrash in sport on the way home tonight and it didn't disappoint me at all. It's obviously not going to throw you back into your seat like an M50d but for a 2 litre engine it can still move a big chunk of metal at quite a pace.

The only negative I have is that the steering feel is a bit light in comfort mode when you aren't motorway driving. I have also had 2 minor issues so far. 1st the connected drive computer has randomly rebooted twice for no apparent reason and I have had the dreaded door seal pop out once on the drivers door.

One other thing I wasn't aware of is that you have to fill it with Adblue about every 9000 miles but it's only about £15 for 10 litres.

All in all I am very impressed with it and I am sure you guys still waiting for delivery won't be disappointed.

Great - thanks for the review, I drove a 520d hire car a few weeks ago in Scotland as was very impressed, it's a great engine!
Just a not of caution with the electric towbar, I have one on my X3 and regularly use it to tow various trailers / caravan. I'm a bit lazy and never fold the towbar away though I tried to do so last week and it appears to have stuck in the 'extended' position. When I press the button in the boot the status light goes from green to red though nothing moves! Might be worth exercising them now and again to prevent this problem!
My new X5 (on order) will have one too though I will try to remember to use it PROPERLY and fold it away when not in use.

Interesting thread. Ordered my 25d sdrive on March 3rd but delivery is only in January 2015 due to lack of allocations for my dealer. Have to order through them because of company lease conditions. So it's going to be a very very very long wait. Hopefully, teething problems will be solved by then !

Deliberately went for the sdrive because of lower taxation (yes, this is Belgium) and no need for xdrive in my driving area whatever I have read on the forum. So went for lots of options instead.

I drove the 30d in December and man what a nice engine. Did not have the opportunity to test drive the 25d because it was not yet available at the driving center nor the dealers. Currentley driving an Audi Q5 2.0 diesel so not afraid the 25d will be underpowered for my intended use.

Looking forward to see experience of other 25d drivers. Will take some time before I can post mine.

Alegria,

I also had a 2.0 diesel q5 Stronic (170 ps) and from my last 2 weeks experience of the BMW engine and transmission I would put it well above the Audi.

Glad to hear you confirm my thoughts.

That's what i reckoned since I did test drive the 325d GT (which was my first idea before getting hooked on the new X5). Was pretty impressed with that engine and that same engine in the X5 did not look bad on paper.

Off course, not the sound of a straight six ...

Happy to see quite a community of 25d user at this forum. I also ordered 25d in January after driving 30d but did a two hour test drive last week with 25d and could not be happier with it. Very dynamic acceleration, surprisingly enough, especially at low speeds! The torque of diesel is impressive even in such small engine (relative to the weight of car).

I'm in the seemingly very small group to opt for the 25D sdrive. I drive in London, if it snows here then the streets will be grid locked by every other idiot - it won't matter what I'm driving because I'll just walk! Delivery due within a month but hopefully sooner - build completed on 27 Feb so 'could' arrive in the UK anytime now.

My thinking on the xdrive other than sdrive was more in relation to safety than driving on the snow. Specially driving when it is raining, or at higher speeds I was quite worried about the idea of having this 2 tones car with only 2wd. don't know if it makes sense or not but that was my reasoning

Let us know when you drive yours and how it performed

I know what you mean and I have wondered if I made the right decision. There may also be an impact on resale value. For me, a cheap X5 offered a better product and better value than a mid-range X3 which is what I was originally weighing up against a Q5, Toureg and XC90.

MJF120, could not agree more and don't think that I ever had a situation where my current quattro made a real difference.

There are far more 2WD cars than 4WD or AWD, some of them also weighing nearly two tons. I have colleagues at work driving 2WD Volvo XC60 and they could not be happier.

If you use you car mostly in city or highway driving, then sdrive makes sense.
Since I'm leasing, not so much concerned about resale value.

The whole AWD debate is to me largely overstated. Same as discussions on this forum about potentially underpowered engines hence let's go for the 50i. Off course, should I be able to afford it then I would maybe not say no. But who needs this really so most people look for every possible reason to justify their purchase. It's probably more about boys and their toys ...

Mind you, I'm excited and feel a lot like a boy too

As mentioned in a thread above, the X5 25d sdrive & xdrive have just been released here in Australia and there already have been a number of reviews in the Australian motoring press. Below are links to a few.

Mixed reviews on the engine but just goes to show that if you like it then that's all that counts.

sdrive mSport or X drive SE?

Newby to BMW as current and last 3 cars have all been Audi (a7 at present) but decided i am going with new X5 and must order in the next week or so

I have decided that the 25d is ok however I don't know whether to go for the Xdrive SE with options such as wheels etc or the Sdrive Msport (with winter tyres) plus various options - total budget allowed is around £51,000.

Thoughts?

For that money you should be able to get a discounted 3D M Sport X Drive.

If you're spending 51k I'd have thought you'd be looking at a 3D SE with 6k of options or 3D MSport with 2k of options? If you go for a 25D Sdrive then after discount you'll have to be adding 10k+ of options? I suppose it depends how many toys you want to add.

dougie, my spec posted above was a shade over £52k list. Personal preference but I think the Msport looks so much better than the SE.

Thanks for info - pricing is a bit different as it's corporate lease where we get good BMW discounts so doesn't tie up into normal pricing due to emission policy of employer and big discount to on extras. I can get winter tyres added.
P11d price of spec is £50,460.

Spec I am looking at is 25d sDrive Msport with following added:

Internet access
Park assist system with steering assist
Reversing camera
Surround view including top view and side view camera
Harman Kardon Hi Fi system
Auto dimming and folding door mirrors
Sun protection glass
Metallic - Black sapphire
Cold Weather pack
ConnectedDrive Services pack
Dakota leather - Black

Some of the above is carry over from what I have on current Audi a7 but would be interested from anyone on the above spec
