They all confirmed me that RF offer a harder ride, are more noisy and have to be replaced a lot sooner. Add to that their higher cost (switching back to std tyres reduced my lease price with 1000 euro on a 60 month lease - 15.000 km per year). That, plus the fact that I have std suspension and no fancy suspension options that might compensate in a way.

I've only driven the X5 twice (a 30D both times for a half an hour or so) and thought indeed that they were rather hard and noisy. Maybe just my imagination and after switching I'll notice it's the same ride with the non RF ?

Don't know ... It's one of two decisions left. I'm also very torn on color, both interior and exterior. Not on the mood for black / black, like the sparkling brown / beige combination but never seen the combination. Wife does not love light interiors as it will get dirty and I don't clean my car every week

Still some months left though before I have to make the final call ...

Cheers,
Alain
Hi Alain,

after almost 3 weeks 2000km in our new X5 30D base line standard RF wheels must say that find it very smooth to drive. The car is very quiet and sometimes i wonder if the motor is running. This for me also the first BMW and first time run flats.

PS Initially i've ordered a 25D xdrive but changed to 30D because got "autosalon condities"

Cheers,
Patrick

Hi Patrick,

I have an operational lease via the company. We get already a nice discount on the list price. Still then, there's a huge difference in the monthly lease rate for a 30D as opposed to a 25d !

My well equipped 25 sdrive leases for 1135 euros / month (incl 65% VAT), whereas a similar 30d is over 1350 euros / month ! That, plus the taxation on company cars (so-called "voordeel in natura") made it too far a stretch for my lease budget and what I'm willing to pay myself.

Actually, the car will come with the RF but I negotiated with the lease company that any replacement tyres would be non-RF which brought the lease price down with more than 20 euros / month (enabling me to add a few options instead).

Maybe I'll try to drive the car again with RF for a longer period to make up my mind. Or keep the standard RF anyhow and then decide what I'll do when they have to be replaced.

Cheers,
Alain

hi AtlantIQUE,

Seems you did the proper testing, both with and without RF.

I went to the BMW center in Bornem as well as to my local dealer in Gent. Both were 30D with upgraded suspension on RF so it's difficult to assess the ride quality with a std suspension on 19" RF or non-RF.

Still weird that all the people I 've spoken to are so negative about RF, and there's entire threads on this and other BMW forums on the RF subject. But glad to hear from you guys that it's maybe not that bad after all.

I'll try to get an additional test drive before deciding on the matter.

Cheers,
Alain

I also read a lot of negativity about RF's and the thing that confuses me is why would bmw make them standard across so much of their range if they aren't better? Especially as they are more expensive? They must feel the safety benefit outweighs the cost and performance issues or else they must feel there aren't many performance issues? I know most manufacturers don't provide them as standard so what is the rationale?

There is as much negativity about RFs as about the 25d engine yet we all decided 25d will do for us. It is all about individual preference. I did 30d in Bornem, non-RF, and apparently with too high expectations as I felt slightly disappointed with engine performance. With non-RF the drive was (too) soft, felt like the car was floating (I am not sure about the suspention the car had but it was very standard, entry-level model, just wheels and engine). Couple of weeks later, I did 25d with RF and apparently must have qualified my expectations by then as I liked the engine and felt much more connected to the road. I am sure anyone else in the same situation may have opposite impressions, that is normal. Also, the car will probably perform much worse when packed with baggages, box on the roof and four people on board. Having said this, I wish you good choices, guys, and a lot of enjoyment driving your x5s.

Hi Alain,

Thanks for the info, for us the X5 is our private car, i have a company car too so my wive is driving the X5 to work. Already asked to swap but she seems to be happier with the BMW than my Renault Megane break. Don't understand

Cheers,
Patrick

Atlantique,

I fully agree with you. The 25d has more than enough power for most drivers as most of the time we're in traffic jams or have to watch out for police radars on every corner of the street or on our highways. No fun anymore driving fast and furious, i have for many years now a relaxed driving style. Who even needs a luxurious SUV

I'm happy with my choice, but dam'n, it's a very long wait till delivery !!

Nice pics Edwin1963. But you do seem a bit young to drive a car, no N.

Huge Congrats!

Looks as you say - AWESOME!
No need to say more :-)

How is your very first impression of driving it - I mean your own car?

And yeah - those rims looks so nice on this car too.

Enjoy!

X5

Just arrived. Smoking new. Happy camper. 19" wheels.

Interior to our very liking as well. Smooth.

Soon, grilles will be in Titanium, but anyhow - the std. ones looks very good too IMHO.

First impressions so good,

Thanks,
Bent

Congratulations, Bent. The car looks just great! I also picked up mine this week, did not drive much yet, though. Enjoy! (and time to change caption in your profile ;-)).

Thanks both of you!

atlantiQue, yes, now profile is updated :-)

But sorry for Alegria - still so long time to go.

I will try to post some more in-detail images soon, going out for a little longer ride today. Already (positively) surprised by a few details I didn't know about.

Its only our garage/parking-space that should have been a bit bigger now

I like small details like the BMW logo on the rubber-mats and door entrance.

Also, surprise.
I didn't know the #1-8 buttons actually are touch-sensitive :-)

I agree its a nice little surprise. I didn't realise for a good 12 months after we got our 2011 F25 X3 that with these buttons, all you had to do was to gently touch without pushing (or even just hover your finger over a button) and it would display what radio station was programmed into that button.
