I could swear there was a Buick out with those same exact tail lights as the Merc. I briefly looked at Buick's website and couldn't find it, so it must be a slightly older car.

Seriously, like the same exact tail lights.

Now that I have been seeing the new C Class on the road; I've been thinking the same thing. The rear end of the C Class just ruins it for me, but the GLE's rear is even worse.

I am envious of MB's ability to hide their radar cruise control sensor behind the emblem on the grill though...

Prefer the X6 by far and I'm not really a fan of the X series cars. Interior of the merc just looks horrible

I don't have an issue with releasing a vehicle to compete in this supposed newly created segment. But did they have to copy the design to reflect a almost identical vehicle, outside of a badge and maybe a slight angle differentiation here and there?

I wouldn't worry about performance. There are also 50i, and x5m (567hp/553 lb-ft VS GLE63 Coupe's 500hp). Although I haven't driven any of them, but I have no doubt that the handling on a X6 will be sportier than a GLE Coupe.

This shot really makes the car look like the E71 X6. Note the lines of the rear decklid and trunk and the angle of the lights.

Thank you for the side by side comparison shots. Very well done, OP.

This helps me out a lot, because I have always been a fan of the X6, and my plan was to jump back into an X6 in 2016. Then I saw the MB Concept Coupe on Youtube, and thought that I may consider switching brands because the Concept Coupe looked amazing in those vids on You Tube.

It's still a bit of a tough choice to make between the two, but I am leaning towards BMW again, now that these photos have been posted. The Concept Coupe had me drooling, but the final product from MB didn't live up to the hype, whereas the I never stopped drooling over the X6 since 2008.

I can't wait to see either of these things in real life. I know these things have had a polorizing affect on car enthusiasts around the world, but these segment cars are designed specifically for guys like me who want an aggressive looking car, that handles well, provides much comfort, and can handle urban winter environments and NYC roads with ease.

BMW interior seems much more practical, and user friendly. Merc interior looks really strange and especially now that BMW has got that widescreen well seated into the dash without affecting your visibility, Merc's big squared screen and even the other automakers with squared screens looks pretty impractical. The worst I have ever seen in interiors is Acura MDX which has two screens on the dash, nonsense.

Audi will also put a competitor on the market.
Do you also complain about BMW following up the 4 door coupé trend initiated by the CLS?

It is quite ridiculous to blame the 3 German premium manufacturers for copying each other nowadays as they have been doing this for some time already, as well in terms of market segment coverage as in range nomenclature, design gimmicks, on-board technology, customization... Every manufacturer seeking to appropriate whatever makes the others special: BMW pushing forward FWD and xDrive technology, Audi making the next A8 RWD with the help of Porsche, BMW opening the M Performance line and Mercedes the AMG Sport line as an answer to the Audi S line, etc. etc...
The Mercedes CLS did not begin the 4 door coupe trend.
Even corvairs of the 60s had 4 door coupe versions.
http://forums.vwvortex.com/showthrea...hevrolet/page2
The most recent 4 door coupe versions to erupt in the 21st century US market is actually the passat CC in 2006 or so, and the IS from Lexus around 2005 with a market release in 2005-6.

The passat CC was more of a base design for the 6 series gran coupe than the IS. It was an obvious thing to emulate in such a large coupe, as the 6 series BMW was suited to the shape of the Passat CC.

No, 4 door coupes have been around for a long time.

But ultimately, design copy is human nature, and there is a greater compliment than a copy or recreation.

There are indeed cyclical trends and if we go even further back we can find various crossover concepts, like for instance sedans with SUV treatment, which if re-introduced today would seem like a totally new niche (actually Scott was reporting such a project being considered by BMW and I think it would be cool, a la Audi Allroad but in sedan form).

Fact is that the first stock 4 door with genuine coupé silhouette in modern era is the Merc CLS launched in 2004.

For 22" wheels to look "right" on a vehicle, I really need to see the GLE car in person to pass judgement. For 22" wheels to look normal on a car in person, it will probably have a lot of presence.

Pictures of the front and rear don't look great, but the side profile I prefer to the X6. Looks IMO like a first gen X6 from the side.

Now the 20" wheels on the X6 look small with large gaps.

I can see that...and that wasn't my point.
I am a fan of "out of dash" style display...as it expands the interior space...however, BMW's display is well designed and flows with the design...
I'm TOTALLY surprised how you can't see the huge difference between the two designs...MB's display just doesn't belong there...it totally out of proportion and simply looks ugly... anyways...others probably see it.

This vehicle is the coupé derivative of the ML = GLE, which is the E-Class level SUV (just like the X5 is the 5 Series level SUV). And since Mercedes does not anymore distinctly name its coupé derivatives (e.g. CL became S Coupé), this is simply called GLE Coupé (unlike X6 which is not called X5 Coupé).

So it's definitely an X6 competitor Note the huge 22" wheels which do not seem evidently bigger than the X6's 20"!
Thanks!
