I wrapped that same area with felt tape I bought from Amazon as well as the small piece next to it right where the trunk shock connects. It fixed my trunk rattle on my brand new X5M.

Great! I think i need to by the same felt tape. I used electrical tape and immediately felt the difference between rattle and total silence.

I didn't have to do this on my 15 35i but I noticed the rattle immediately when i picked up my 16 X5M. Honestly it doesn't hurt to wrap it regardless to eliminate any chance of noise appearing there.
I realized the sound was coming from there by accident when i was washing my car and leaned on the tailgate. I felt the door move slightly and it made a sound and tracked it down to that area that i wrapped was touching another plastic trim on the car. Alan
