I wrapped that same area with felt tape I bought from Amazon as well as the small piece next to it right where the trunk shock connects. It fixed my trunk rattle on my brand new X5M.

Great! I think i need to by the same felt tape. I used electrical tape and immediately felt the difference between rattle and total silence.

Is this common to all X5's? If so, I don't seem to notice the rattle at all or maybe i got used to it?

I didn't have to do this on my 15 35i but I noticed the rattle immediately when i picked up my 16 X5M. Honestly it doesn't hurt to wrap it regardless to eliminate any chance of noise appearing there.

I realized the sound was coming from there by accident when i was washing my car and leaned on the tailgate. I felt the door move slightly and it made a sound and tracked it down to that area that i wrapped was touching another plastic trim on the car.

Wow, Alan... That is exactly how i pin-pointed this myself. Needless to say, while having it repaired by the dealer, i specifically pointed this out to a tech, while tech was inside the car, he heard it and documented it... Nothing got fixed. Tech (shop foreman) came outside, pressed against the trunk in that area and heard clicking sound. 2 days later i got the car back with "lubricating and adjusting " listed as a fix...
It used to drive me mad, and i wanted to drive my X5 through he wall. Not anymore))) I like it now)))
