Need help! Noise driving me nuts. SOLVED!

Hoping someone here has had a similar problem and found the solution.

I'm getting a fluttering/flapping noise when driving at speed with the drivers side window open only.

The particulars!
It doesn't happen all the time, seems to happen when it's windy and blows in at a certain angle.
It's really quite loud.
Sounds like plastic but muffled as if covered cloth material. At first I thought the rear driver side seat belt was flapping against the pillar but no.
It's defiantly coming from behind the drivers seat.
I have my sunroof sunshade all the way open. The sound stops if I close the sunshade at least half way?!?!?!?!
Checked to see if anything was loose in the space where the sunshade retracts into but looks fine. I think close the sunshade simply disrupts the airflow to where it can't vibrate whatever is making the noise.
Dunno if this matters but I have 3rd row seat option, seats are folded down. Also have rear entertainment but the screens are solid are far as I can tell.

Thanks guys!

the noise must come from gap between glass and sunshade?

This is a common issue with all X5's including the X5M.

I noticed this flapping/fluttering sound when i have the windows open and the sunshade open but sunroof closed. Its like the air rushing in has no place to go and its causing something inside the headliner to flap around. I only notice mine doing that when I am accelerating aggressively under the conditions above. Several others onthe X5M forum also commented about hearing the same noise.

Someone mentioned it was the water drain flaps causing the noise in the roof but that's not verified.

Man... It actually scared me when i heard this "flopping popping" noise first time. At times i can even replicate it, although it is not easy.

^^ same here. It sounds almost mechanical like something is royally messed up but the instant I let of the gas the sound stopped. Then i thought the only times i've ever heard the noise was with my windows open under heavy acceleration. Windows closed there is no noise, windows open but sunroof visor closed no noise.

are you guys referring to wind buffeting? does the sound go away if you open up all the windows?

In my case i was not fast enough to try roll all windows down. Noise pops when, lets say, take off from the traffic light. Popping is very loud and naturally is causing one to take foot of the pedal. Car slows, noise is gone.

No, watch Alan's video.

For me, I thought it was the rear cargo cover which I left opened and it flaps.

It happened twice for me. I can't replicate it though. It seems like the wind/ air coming into the cabin must be just right..

Follow-up...seems to be solved

So instead of wrapping the drain flaps in electrical tape I decided to try a couple of rubber bumpers(the one's you would use on kitchen cabinets and what not). Objective being adding weight to the door so it won't flutter when wind is forced out of the drain hole. So far after 2 day of driving with the window open I have not heard the noise. Added bonus for those of you who haven't fixed the squeaky armrest these work perfect there too.
Cheers! Thx again Alan!
