iDrive 5.0

Rumors says that the 2017 X5 will have a new touch display and the new iDrive software as in the 7-series. I really don't care about the touch display but I'm curious about the iDrive. Does anyone knows if it will be possible to upgrade the current iDrive in f15?

I haven't tried it myself yet. Are there any cool new features or is it mostly the design that has been upgraded?

You likely won't be able to upgrade as the firmware will be different. It's mostly new design. We have it in our 7. Nothing groundbreaking. Evolution not revolution.

I just got some info from my dealer saying with regards to model 2017 X5 - idrive 5.0 will NOT have a touchscreen (at least for the August 2016 production). Changes will be to the layout of the menus he said. So no gesture control no touchscreen - at least that is my understanding. I do not care about the touchscreen, but 7 series screen also has a superior resolution compared to the screen in F15. No word on the resolution of the MFD either (hope they make that better, but somehow I doubt). So HUD will most likely stay the same as well but the graphics should change in line with the idrive 5.0 I think?

There are definitely more features added beyond just the ability to use touchscreen and hand gestures, in addition to current touch idrive control.

I attached a couple documents highlighting Displays and Controls as well as Navigation.

Wow, this was informative, thanks a lot!!. Had no idea that the 7 series offers TWO different MFDs, smaller one being signifficantly lower resolution. Was kinda hoping they would increase the resolution for the X5 but that seems kind of unlikely...

Cool! Thank you for update!

I guess it's unlikely that I will get the iDrive 5.0 in my order set to be produced late April 16. Not a big thing, but it would be nice to have.

Me too, care about more on the new system than the touch display. If the 5.0 is good enough, may be consider to do an possible retrofit, since the screen and controller are the same as current version

I've been eagerly looking around since last October into idrive 5.0..
Does this mean we finally could get it coded to our current 2015 models? Excluding the gusture and touchscreen, the rest will be only software difference, right?

Which features are you hoping to gain by software upgrades alone? I have read there is a newer high resolution screen plus some other necessary hardware.

Am not sure there will be a higher resolution screen as from what I have heard there will be NO touchscreen option, so they can use the same screen (I guess). With regards to other HW it may change, but who knows, maybe BMW cheaps out and they make ONLY some menu visual changes.

To put couple of spark ideas out there.. My main interest is the graphic user interface (UI) anything else would be a bonus and will make my day
I believe in one step at a time approach, but If I wanna be greedy I would want the new Frontal Camera view too.
Just to drop in another bone, press and holding one of the buttons on the key FOB instead of press and holding the ParkAssist button for Self-Park would be a time savor too..

I do not have park assist, which is interesting--as an aside--cause car has PMA ECU similar to what F10 requires for park assist and auto-PDC.

I do have 360 degree camera view, including front camera on the GUI, so not sure what you mean by that.

Sat in a new 6 today with the new idrive appearance. There is no touchscreen, nor gesture control, menues look like that of a new seven. Did not check the surround/top view, am regretting it now. I would not be surprised if it was just a software change and it more/less comes down to the appearance only unlike the 7 that offers more features. Impressed me far less than i thought it would.

Went again to check out the idrive in 6GC. This time
I turned on the engine to see HUD, surprised there was zero difference as oppose to the 7 where the design graphics are different. Also checked surround (more like top view in the 6 as it does not have a camera in the front), no difference apart from the PDC display on the left that has different graphics but again same function. Also noticed when you adjust volume B&O is written along with the volume. Buttons around idrive controller are now are now different as one but is for two functions, difficult for me to explain, but anyways a small difference. After looking at it today I think it does not have new HW, looks to me (apart from the buttons) a SW upgrade. My dealer confirmed that X5 MY 2017 will have the new menus. So to elaborate more NO touch display for F15.

In the six 6 it is nr 3. The image of the drawn car looks different though. In the 7 series you have to option to see the car from the side as well (as shown in the previous post in this thread). 7 does have a camera upfront so maybe it is just some programming to be done so maybe maybe, if they bothered it will be available for the F15 as well.

Thanks. Talk to the genius, tells me that it is same hardware (in the 6 series), just new menus, new look grpahics and differently arranged buttons around the idrive. Looks good but NOT NEARLY AS COOL LIKE ON THE 7.
