Clear windshield film has NO effect on HUD....polarized sunglasses still a problem
I am getting transferred to Texas and wanted to get the ceramic heat blocking window film to help with the heat coming in the car while driving. I had read some posts on other forums that getting the clear heat blocking film on the inside of the windshield did NOT effect the ability to see the HUD. But none of these were with BMWs.
Well, I got it done yesterday and there is absolutely NO change in the HUD. Clear as day. Just in case anyone wanted to know. Also, the gal at the shop mentioned that another customer said that applying the film allowed him the ability to view the HUD projection while using polarized sunglasses....which as most of us know, is currently not possible. Before the film was applied, using my polarized sunglasses I could not see the HUD projection at all. Now, I can see it, but it is still very dim, I would say about 30-40% of the brightness compared to not using polarized glasses. It's just dim enough that I think I need to get some non-polarized prescription lenses for those early morning hours when the sun is up but I can't bear to put in contacts. |

I've never had problems with polarized sunglasses; I didn't realize it was because of my windscreen film. I just assumed my sunglasses were polarized in a different direction.

My tinting vendor used Air Blue 80 before but said some complained about the blue tint. I liked what I had and lost nothing in terms of HUD. I don't remember the name of the other tint they offered but it was supposed to be neutral. Anyone know if the 'neutral' tint would be a problem or should I just insist on Air Blue 80 again?

Did you guys know that if you tilt you head to the right slightly you are able to see the HUD with your polarized sunglasses on?

To be honest, I don't know what the Llumar product is actually called. I had it on a car before and I thought Blue was in the name (??), but I never noticed a blue tint (like Mercedes factory tint from a few years ago). It was clear.

Yeah, I noticed that. The day I got the windshield done I was testing to see how far I would have to tilt my head to see the HUD and my wife says..."what's wrong with your neck????" I explained it to her and got the eye roll.

I have an international trip next week followed by three weeks of open-road driving when all my tint will be thoroughly tested.

That works too but I usually am not wearing sunglasses most of the time. So I rather tilt my head to take a glance at what I need to see. I'm not constantly looking at HUD.
