My X5 35d was in for service the other day, including the usual oil and filter change, etc. Included in the service were a battery change and software update.
I was a little disappointed when I picked up the car and all my pre-sets had been erased, including the dash buttons, seat position, mirrors, and steering wheel. Does anyone know if this is unavoidable or is it a situation where the proper procedure wasn't followed?

I'm thinking maybe the battery swap might be the reason for everything being reset?

midlifecrisis, I had similar experiences losing all kinds of settings. Mine is 08/2014 built 2015 35d. Had 2nd oil service at about 18,000 mile a couple of months a ago. My local dealer did a software upgrade for EGR recall. But dealer wouldn't change my battery although I asked for it per the battery replacement SIB, the SA said its reader or CBS (condition based service) didn't tell to do it, so he couldn't do it. Could you look your service report to check what it says about battery replacement? Also, it seems the mpg drops a little after the software upgrade, don't know if you and other 35d owners have the similar, too.

I took my 35i in for an iDrive issue I was having. They reprogrammed/updated the software and I too lost all of my settings, or so I thought. After messing around with my setting and buttons I noticed that my settings profile was not selected. I selected my profile and voila, my seats moved back into place, steering wheel tilted, and my connected drive screen set-up restored it's self.
Have you tried reengaging your profile? Or have they been totally erased? |

I've found some updates have no effect on saved settings while others, such as the EGR recall update recently performed, wiped out all of our saved settings.
It's easy to back up your settings to a USB drive, and you need to do a back up for each fob, but you don't know when an update will do this. In the case of the recent EGR update, it was even worse as I didn't even know an update was going to be performed until I checked in my X5 for a regular service. The only way to prevent this is to do a back up each time before you take the vehicle in for service, but that's inconvenient. Seems to me BMW should include a settings back up and restore as part of any update they perform. |

For certain devices, it is a bad idea to restore settings after firmware/ software updates. Is this not the case with backed up profiles on USB's? At least for the coding I do, I cannot simply restore files.
When dealers do updates, they usually do as an automated process for the entire system. However, I guess sometimes settings would not be wiped if current and targets in individual ECU modules were the same in the case of short intervals between updates. I definitely take the time to customize multiple pre-sets so I will have to look into profiles. Mine were just wiped on my most recent service visit. |
