Long Road trip considerations?

Hey All,

Planning a long road trip at the end of summer (mid September) from TX up through CO, 2.5k+ miles expected. Besides bringing additional oil for the ol hungry 50i, can anyone think of anything else I should be considering? Additional equipment I should bring? Anyone from CO can tell me should I expect anything from a weather point of view?

Some facts for trip and my car
-50i M sport with 20in runflats, no spare (Front and rears replaced within last year)
-Expecting to be off on gravel or worse roads at times
-Might camp out a couple nights in the state parks, haven't decided yet
-Majority of the trip will be up through the mountains besides the long boring Texas parts

Thanks in advance!

I know you said you are running run flats.....but I would carry a tire plug kit in case you had a small leak and couldn't get to a tire repair center.

Yep, definitely a good call. I do have one of those small car 12v inflators I leave under the rear cargo floor at all times, but not sure how well it would actually perform. Will look into the plug kits.

Get a spare tire. I blew out the sidewall on a tire at 3 am in North Dakota with no cell service far from any place that had a replacement tire (lived in California at the time). Fortunately I carry a satellite phone, but AAA told me no tow could come until the next Monday (it was Saturday). I drove 300 miles on the donut spare to a shop that had my tire in stock.

Bring a cable to charge your phone and go. 2.5k miles is even not that long, lol.

This happened to my '14 530d in 2016 doing the speed limit of 50mph on DC highway hitting a pothole (295) at night. Right as I hit it, sensors went crazy and the audible sound from the tire was really noticeable. If it wasn't for runflat, I would have been done right there in place w/o a shoulder to change a spare. I pulled off to the next exit to the gas station to take a look and figured I could make it home about 10-15 miles away or so. Took it slow and went to the dealer the next morning. A spare will be nice as mentioned as I have a trip from the east to the mid-west come July despite having runflats as the dealer more than likely will not have a tire in stock for immediate replacement.

Also a portable air compressor in case your tire pressure runs low.

Include a first aid kit as well (if you don’t already have one).

I'll second that portable pump, in addition... a small fire extinguisher, portable battery supply, and fix a flat (I've used fix a flat on run flats for an additional 300 miles before I changed to non rfs before).

Thanks, I was wondering if anyone had any experience using this here. Did the fix a flat hold the whole 300 miles ok? Meaning, did it leak or did you have to re apply or anything?

Like others have said, take a spare with you. They don't take up much space, and will give you peace of mind.

Tire socks come in handy, no matter if its snow or sand/mud ... I have gotten stuck here and there before and besides, that in some areas chains are a requirement... these $100 socks will hardly take up any room and save you from a fine or being stuck somewhere...

These are the ones I carry with me... https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1
