Metal shavings are very bad. Glitter/sparkling trans oil is fairly normal. The magnets will also always have a coating of material. What it is I am uncertain but could be clutch material and some of the glitter coagulated together. At any rate, if the pan looks like the 3 I posted on the previous page, I don't think there would be anything to worry about. OP, so all you had done was the trans adaptations? New, matched diameter tires rules out the transfer case (for the most part). I think the trans needs a service or possibly valve body rebuild. Continued banging is only going to make the clutch that handles those gears worse. |

I had the exact same issue in my 2015 X5 35d after about 70k miles. Harsh 3-2 shifts, ESPECIALLY when giving it a tiny bit of gas. This occurred primarily in 2 situations:
1) getting on the gas halfway through a turn just as the transmission is shifting from 3-2 2) Going up a steep grade while giving the car gas and simultaneously slowing down (maybe going up a hill towards a stop sign). If the car shifted from 3-2 while on the gas, it created a violent jerk. The 6-7 upshift was also somewhat harsh and sloppy, but it was less bad than the 3-2. After discussing the issue with the dealer and two independent BMW shops, we tried resetting adaptations (free), and we tried updating the EGS software ($199 including diagnostic charge, including updating most of the other software in the car). Neither helped. All they could recommend was replacing the mechatronics ($5k parts and labor) which MIGHT solve the problem or replacing the transmission ($10-11k). (I live in Bay Area CA so prices are high). They all 3 said that solenoids are not available aftermarket. Next, I brought the car to a ZF specialist an hour from my house. They said worst case scenario they could rebuild the transmission, replace solenoids, or tighten up clutch packs, depending on what they found after opening it up. But first they recommended simply changing the oil and filter to see if that helped. So they replaced the oil + filter ($679 parts and labor with tax) (f*** CA prices). But happily, that fixed the problem entirely! So for anyone experiencing this problem, I highly recommend starting with the oil/filter change first. That saved me from much more expensive repairs. |

Have you gotten your transfer case fluid changed? I also had my zf8 hp45 replaced with brand new. With my scenario I had one jerk mid wot and the next day it broke completely.

No - it wasn't necessary since the transmission fluid/filter change solved my problem.
Is there a recommended maintenance schedule for transfer case fluid? BTW, I went to a respected ZF rebuilder for my fluid change. He said that BMW is crazy for saying the fluid will last the life of the car, and ZF recommends changing it every 50-70k miles. My car was right at 70k miles when it started the harsh shifts. |

Before you throw parts at the car. Check the transfer case fluid and do the mandatory calibration otherwise tugging gets even worse. Than spark plugs can also create this scenario of tugging without cel light mimicking the trans failure.

My problem is solved so I'm not planning to do anything else.
