Those with M Performance Brakes.... What spare?
What are you guys doing as your spare wheel/tire? From what i understand that the stock spare tire doesn't work with the MPB. Is it due to the diameter size or just caliper spacing where the use of a spacer would fix it?
Perhaps swapping the existing spare with one meant for the X5M could work but not sure if it would also fit right into the spare tire area plus its another added cost on top of the MPB. Alan

Alan,
I think 20" is the bare minimum. I personally just carry a patch in my car. So once the TPMS gave warning, I will find nearest gas station with air pump and patch it at the spot.

I am just more worried about a blow out with 22"s and NYC roads. I thought maybe if I had a blow out up front i could swap the rear wheel to the front and put the spare back there but not sure how the xdrive will like seeing the size difference between the front axles.

If I were still on the 20" 469's i wouldn't worry about a blow out as much but on 22"s its a different story. I purposely ordered my X5 with the spare because i don't want to be stranded with two kids in the car if i got a flat/blowout. Looks like no MPB for me...

Yes, in Australia, you need min. 19# rims for M performance brakes. I have upgraded M50d brakes, on 20' rims in my X5.
In Australia we have crap roads and travel huge distances, run flat tyres have not been well received down under, however they are the norm now. I have not tried the space saver over my brakes, so very good question. Will have to try. However I always carry a can of 'tyre inflater' just in case. Our issue is that outside the city, most tyre shops don't have wheel fitting machines that take 20' rims. This is why, 18' & 19" wheels are better all round for regular 'outside' city use. Its not uncommon to have a BMW dealer have to air-freight a wheel & tyre out west to a stranded customer. (Been there!). |

There are two X5 emergency spare wheels.
The standard Steel 5Jx18" ET14 one "36 11 6 768 861" Then the is the alloy one that is the only one listed as to be used with the X5M, but is also listed under all other F15 X5 on the parts system It is 5Jx19" ET:4 part number "36 11 6 775 450" Would think if it can clear the X5M brakes it can clear teh M Performance brakes

Spare tire well is not deep enough for regular tire/wheel, if i remember right its only 7-8 inches deep.
i ordered mine with spare tire, i thought about getting a regular 19" wheel/tire combo when i found out this kinda doughnut tire has 50mph limit use but found out there's not enough depth in wheel well. |
