Powder Coat 451 OEM in Black (NEW PICS)

hi everyone...anyone have a pic of what 451s look like in Black? i'm getting mine powder coated this week and struggling to see them on the car.

i'm between a satin finish and a 'flat' matte look. i think the glossy may be too much. not sure...i have a '15 alpine white lux line with 20s 451s.

thoughts on what may look better? i was leaning towards the satin finish. having a hard time w the pic uploads so link below. Thanks!

UPDATE with PICS

finally got the car back...gloss black powder coat. i think they look great. hard to tell from the picture, but they pop nicely and def make the car a bit more aggressive.

Thanks for all the comments!

Next up: Ben's kidney grills, MPPK and MPE. All to be installed next week...trying to make up a bit for my disappointing build given i never read this forum before i ordered

Personally i think full matte black looks "cheap" to me. I would go gloss black if it were my own car. Another plus for Gloss is that matte wheels are harder to clean/wash and more vunerable to chemical damage.

I know that everyone is different and looks are subjective but I just don't see the fascination over black rims.. the color makes the rim look smaller overall and for me at least it kills the look of the car. If it were me I would go maybe gunmetal color!

^^ same here. I like the 451's the way they come but if i had to choose black it would be gloss black.

A Matter of Taste

Looks are subjective. That said, I like Satin; it's a nice balance of the choices.

that's going to look good...i thought about it when you sent that over. it will look good with your paint for sure

i pulled the trigger on the gloss after a lot of thought and looking at this old post...http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=998023

i'm pairing that up with Ben's grill which is also gloss, so that ties the theme.

will post results friday after i get the car back...wish me luck!

you gotta ask them to go as glossy jet black as they can...more gloss the better. you need to offset your white with bright shine wheels. they will also help fill the wheel well more, by not blending with the matte tire....as much gloss as possible....but im all in for satin gunmetal....im debating between the two for my black msport

Don't worry about it.. Most people do the same.. they purchase the BMW then come do their research after. You know what to do next time

I'm not into black wheels but as long as your excited about that is what counts!
Happy modding!

Wheel tech
www.rimrepaircenter.com

In Chicago this is by far the only place to go. Found them through Blackhawks here in forum and after researching it's clear these guys are the best.

They did a great job w the wheels. Price depends on wheel size and how intricate you want to get w color combos. Expect to pay between 600 and 800 depending on what you have. Rate card is on their website.

Maybe a dumb question, but when you paint, or powder coat, a rim on top of the factory finish do you change any characteristics of the wheel that potentially make it more difficult to balance? I'd hate to spend all that money on wheels only to add a custom finish and introduce vibrations to the ride.

No, because wheels aren't uniform to begin with. Balancing always makes up for density voids in the metal or a slightly miscast shape, etc. All this should do is change your balance weight requirements and balance points. The shop (or you, if you have access to a machine) is doing is applying weights to counter the flaws inherent in the natural balance of the wheel.

When in doubt, pay for a road-force balance. It costs a bit more but can be great for getting rid of small issues

I take all my daily drivers to a local race shop for balancing and calibration because I find them to do a much better job (with no damage to my wheels) than BMW service. Like many of us here, I'm more sensitive to vibration and expect the car to feel the way it was intended. I would think that the more layers of paint added to the wheels the better chance you have of creating an imbalanced situation (weights can only correct so much) and I'd also expect the finish to be more easily chipped/damaged. Again, none of that is from experience though. If that were the case I guess less people would be doing it.

Weights are technically limitless in their ability to correct. Your only limit is available room for the weights and the skill of the technician.

As for creating an imbalance, your wheels are naturally out of balance. Beyond that, uneven density and wear of your tires creates far greater balance issues than any coating ever will. The weight of coatings is neglible compared to the tire, and the tire has a far greater moment due to its position relative to the hub axis.

We all want our cars to drive well, but there is a limit to what was "intended." Engineers always have parameters and tolerances, because so many variables are uncontrollable. That said, your X5 should be very smooth indeed. Especially with the time and money you spent on balancing.

Powder coat without fear!
