Airflow to rear with 4 zone AC option?
I am still considering options for my build and whether to spec the 4 zone climate control. I see that it adds two additional rear vents on the B-pillars, but I am wondering if they really flow very much additional air to the rear- they just seem too isolated to be very effective. Can anyone comment on this feature in their X5?
Also, can the rear AC unit be controlled from the dash rather than reaching back over the center console? Often have a furry Bernese Mountain Dog who will be in the back and cannot operate the controls since he has no thumbs... Thanks for any info! |

I have it and find it pretty effective. I'm pretty sure when you press the SYNC button, the driver controls everything (temp/air speed) including the back. I'll double check for you when I drive my car today.
Update: Just checked the SYNC button- once pressed, the driver controls everyone's temperature and air speed.

The X5 we test drove was of the 4 Zone Climate Control variety. We were in Boulder, at Gebhardt, a couple of weekends ago when it was in the upper 70's. The rear AC did work very well and the B-Pillar vents do flow a noticeable amount of air.

When I order our X5 later this year, I'll be ticking the option box for the 4-zone AC purely to get the B-pillar vents. I come from a background of Volvos where vents in the B-pillar have been around for years and really are the best means to get air flow to the rear seat passengers (and dogs) because they are basically at head-height. All the normal air vents in the back of the centre console does is to blow cold (or hot) air onto the knees of rear seat passengers.
As far as I'm aware the controls (and temperature sensors) are on a small control panel on the back of the centre console usually only assessable by rear-seat passengers (or very well trained dogs). I also occasionally will be carrying dogs in the back seat in which case I use a full cover seat protector which would also happens to cover up the normal air vents in the back of the centre console which further adds to the advantage of the vents in the B-pillar.
