Scared to pull the trigger

I'm inches away from pulling the trigger on a 50i, but terrified of having a repeat of the issues I had with my f25 35i x3 (2011). The lurching from throttle tip in never did get resolved despite every software update in the book (even a sprint booster didn't help).

I'd love to get rid of it and get my 50i, but I have this nagging feeling like it's too risky given the unfixable lurching on my x3. I swore I'd never by another bmw, but I'm in love with the 50i.

I've seen a few posts about lurching on the 35d and 50i here from throttle tip in from a stop, people saying it's just normal behaviour for these BMWs...

I didn't notice any tip in issues on the 50i I test drove but my x3 didn't do it until 3000kms either so it's probably not a valid comparison.

If a person is sensitive to that particular issue given past experience like this, would you shy away from upgrading? Or am I just paranoid now?

No lurching at all in my X5 and neither did my 2013 535xi or my 2014 550i. Lots of guys with 2011 and 2012 5 series had lurching issues that were all resolved by 2013. just pull the trigger

Doesn't matter what you buy, there is a risk. Or if you stay with what you have there is a risk. It's all a crap-shoot. Just do what you want to do and quit worrying about what-ifs. It's just the luck of the draw. Whatever you get might be trouble free, or it might not. Worrying about it is no way to live your life. For what it's worth, I've got 8k miles on my 50i, which includes city, highway, below zero and snowy winter, triple digit summer heat, etc. and I have had no issues. Not a single problem. Nothing. Others have had problems. The same could be said for every model of every brand.

For that kind of money, and you have any reservations, don't do it.

Personally I've had a lemon Mercedes before. Have bought three more since after that experience. I just go head first into things no reservations.

But if you don't feel comfortable, I'll say all things and brands have their fair share of issues. In this day in age with everything being digital it's hard to "guarantee" things don't go wrong. So anything after warranty should have a consumer worried.

I have to agree with 42pilot. At the very least take a month to stop thinking about it altogether, live with the car you have, and then make the decision.

There's a risk with every large purchase... A car, a house, a Rolex. If it doesn't feel right then listen to your gut. But, if it doesn't fee right because something can go wrong with the car then you wouldn't feel comfortable buying a new Chevy, either. Trust your gut, but don't be afraid to pull the trigger, either.

FWIW, no lurching in my '14 X5 5.0, just incredible power when the turbos spin up. Addictive!

My 2014 50i, no issues, no so called lurching. Much nicer than my 2013 F25 35i. So if you decide yes, you are in for a real treat.

FWIW, I haven't seen any recent threads on this topic, so I assume it is basically not prevalent.

Had a 2011 X3 35i MSport, then a 2013 X5M, and finally settled in with a 2015 X5 50i MSport. The 50i is the smoothest of the bunch and has none of the lurching characteristics of the X3, you'll love it. There is enough juice that you can tool around in eco/comfort mode if you really want to be ultra-smooth.

I have no such issue on my 35d, and I've driven the 5.0 and did not experience that either

This thread is a microcosm of the world and how different personalities go about their lives. Some are apprehensive about things and some throw caution to the wind. There is a time and place for both but it seems the people who are mostly apprehensive lead the most unfulfilled and dull lives.

I had some lurching with my 2012 E70 50i which was related to the power in 1st gear but have had no such issues with my 2014 F15 50i. In Comfort mode particularly the shifts are very smooth and there is no lurching. I do
appreciate it occasionally when in Sport mode and at slow speeds in 1st or 2nd gear.

Thanks for everyone's feedback I really appreciate it (with the exception of the guy who thinks I must lead a dull life).

I realize nothing is risk-free obviously, but a manufacturer's inability to fix a known issue (in the case of my x3) is all that gave me hesitation.

Knowing that x3 owners have been happy with their 50i's is great to know. Software-driven vehicles have some big advantages in terms of fixes, but bugs can be hard to squash as well.

Jeez dude, talk about taking things personally. I didn't say you lived a dull life. I said, "it seems the people who are mostly apprehensive lead the most unfulfilled and dull lives."

Maybe that is you...I don't know and will never claim to know because I don't know you. You do have to admit that your concern, while real to your car, is over-the-top to think that way about BMW in general. Enjoy your new X5...and chill out a bit.
