Looking to pruchase X5M...have questions

I currently have a Range Rover HSE diesel that I enjoy, however I miss the power of the M cars. Living in the Northeast I need 4WD/AWD. I had 2013 M6 cab which disappointed in handling. It was my summer vehicle and I prefer one phenomenal cruiser. Any issues/drawbacks with the X5M?
Thank you.

I went from an M6GC to the X5M, very happy. You lose some of the raw feel of the lower car and rear wheel drive, but the overall experience is awesome and I'd do it again.

I live in the NE and went from a M5 to a X5M. The X5M allows you to get the power down more easily and with snow tires is great in the winter. The extra space also makes it a more useful car year round.

Thank you! Does the engine eat thru oil? Do you need to add oil prior to every 5000 miles?

Funny you should ask.

I have had to add 2 liters in the past 1000 miles. I am at 11,500 miles and due to go in for my yearly service next month. For all of my past M cars I have had to add a liter about every 6000 miles so this one seems a bit excessive. However, I have read that others have been told that as long as it is more than 750 miles between adding, this is "normal."

My M6 was similar with oil consumption. I'm sure your Porsche are less thirsty...

I'm sure you've read up on the squeaky brakes and the wheel bearing clicks. The car does sound like a tank driving around in a parking garage.

Handling wise- it tends to understeer like most awd cars do, I would recommend the 21" rims instead of the 20"s so you can get the MPSS on them. It is a great handling heavy suv.

I've only had to add one qt in 15,000 miles. Was between the first 2 oil changes.

My 911 doesn't get enough miles for me to know (2-3000 miles a year). It is a nice weather car only.

Unlike others I've been very fortunate that to this day and I am just shy of 29,000 miles that I have not had to put one drop of oil in between regular services.

Also, I have minimum brake squeal issues too. Yes it occurs from time to time (had it with my SL550) but not constant and my SL550 was more constant and annoying.

I think you would get a kick out of the X5M (even though you probably already know the car well without driving it). All I can say is the ride is superb!

This has been my experience also. Currently at 11K miles.

I also went from a '14 M5 to a '17 X5M. Absolutely love it. While it doesn't handle quite as well as the M5 it does actually telegraph its limits better and it really fun to drive in corners and highway sweepers. It's a fantastic and fun beast.

How would you compare the visual beltline between the M5 and X5M ?

The X5M is clearly taller.

Looks like the M5 is pretty good from the pics I've seen. Not X5M good, but decent. My X5M has spoiled me. My 2017 ZO6 has a very high beltline. 2018 M5 could be a replacement.

I actually like the X6M as well, albeit slightly unusual visually, amazing handling.

15K miles on mine. Zero issues. Never had to add oil. I do not have the wheel clicking. Also, I clean the wheels and brake components thoroughly (mainly soaking) during washes and rarely have any brake squeal.

i've owned my X5M for 2 years now and 15,000 miles so far. no major issues pre-se except for wheel bearing issues (fixed after 3rd attempt). i have not needed to add any oil in-between regular services.

other issues to consider:
1. 10-15 MPG around town
2. expensive winter tires (you will need them since they come w/ MPSS)
3. depreciation is a mother. buy used w/ certified warranty (i regretted not doing that)
4. turbo lag, nothing happens under 3K
