20" Continental DWS tires making WhOooOoo sound
My 20" Continental Extreme DWS (all season non-RF) were just installed and now have 100 miles on them. They are making a tire pipe resonance sound.
Anyone notice tire pipe resonance with the Conti DWS on staggered 20's? The sound occurs more so at certain speeds ie 25 to 30 mph and at 65 mph, but the sound rears its head at other speeds as well. It sounds like wind traveling through a flute...WhOooOooOoo.... It is on the subtle side. The tires are over all fairly quite with no tire vibration. I am hoping with some break in...the resonance will resolve. It does sound similar to a slightly bad wheel bearing, but the vehicle is so new, that I would say that is very unlikely. Is this just part of the tread design of the Conti Extreme DWS? With no vibration issues, would you say a balance issue or a bad tire is very unlikely? Thoughts? |

I have 19" and Conti DWS. I hear some sound too, but wondering it if is some getting used to the sound my 35d puts out. I see you have one also - is this your first diesel?
I think I'm hearing the engine sound which is new to me, not sure it is the tires. it's kind of the rrr-rrr-rrr that a diesel puts off. Reminds me of a fishing boat. That said, when I thump it, it does sound bold! Last edited by Wardman; 11-18-2014 at 08:39 PM.. |

Hmmm the engine... I guess that is a possibility. Yes, it is my first diesel. I will play closer attention to the diesel engine noises.
The WhooOooOoo sound may be a certain hz tone that some are sensitive to and others are not. |

I tried to coast in neutral, no engine today. You cannot shut off the X5 while driving. I noticed the sound, but wondering
1 - if it is the engine or 2 - I need a high speed alignment since I only had the DWS balanced when installed and the car was brand new. |

Can you guys tell me what is the load rating of the DWS? Maybe that could be the problem.

Other thing that I can think off just the thread design and the tire compound.

My first set of DWS - usually go Michelin but price was so much different and I had read good thing, I decided to try them. Same weight specs as the OEM tires too and speed rating.
