BMW 21" wheels -

- To those of you that bought the 21" Wheels, are the tires that come with it also Run Flats?

- Has anyone bought the winter tire package? OR does everyone just go on tirerack and buy their winter set?

- The M-Performance brake upgrade - is that applicable to the 50i? I vaguely remember seeing a bimmerpost featured build with it, but does it do anything? for the 50i? Any benefit? (lastly, I can't seem to find a photo of the stock M-sport set up)

thanks and cheers!

1) These are the only tire options that you get for the 21" wheels: http://www.realoem.com/bmw/showparts...95&hg=36&fg=30. I do not recall them being Runflats. I can find you a good deal for tires/wheels if you choose not to go OEM 21". I have replica 22" but I have helped a few members with other different options as has r33. Regardless, whatever you decide, let me know, and I'll try to help you out.

2) Some have bought the winter tire package and are quite happy. A lot of guys go with the DWS all-season for winter and love it. I don't have my car back yet, but my Delinte D8s have been phenomenal in all conditions from low to high speeds. I just haven't had a chance yet to test them in snow, but on Jeep and Tacoma forums, they handle great in snow.

3) You can upgrade to M-Performance Brakes on the 50i. wdimagineer, atomic80, and a few others have them on their 50i's. It does help in braking power from what I've read. I'll definitely be upgrading in the future to a bigger brake kit when my stock ones wear out. For now, you'll be just fine with the stock brakes though. Here is stock M-Sport:

Here you can see wdimagineer's F15 that he is selling with all the performance options: http://f15.bimmerpost.com/forums/sho...d.php?t=975407

thanks for the info. Sounds like I should go with stock m-sport 19" All Seasons, then order the 455's. Then when the stock 19's rubbers go out, i can get blizzaks.

- I still don't fully understand. BMW maintenance program covers the rotors right? So if I purchased the M-performance brakes - are those pads and rotors still covered?

Opasha, are you meaning once the 50000 or 5 years are up, you'll do a upgrade?

Yeah, that's probably the best option.

I think if you purchase through BMW, your covered. I don't think they cover anything outside of OEM sales, but someone can correct me if they know the maintenance program inside and out .

I'm not really sure. I'll get my friend to inspect them in a year or so just to see how they are holding up with the amount of HP and braking.

Michelin now has BMW oem tires in 21" sizes. 285/35 f and 325/30 r. Non run flat. Will be on X5M and X6M. I got an early set for my 599M wheels. Should be the best tire available.

Agree, the tires that came on the 599M set are Pirelli P Zero runflat summer tires. I bought the Michelins so I did not have to use the runflats.

troymi charles521 Wonder if you can now get RF All Season 20" now rather than just Performance?

To my understanding, Run Flat Tires are designed to resist deflation when punctured but deliver a harsher ride. Are there any particular reasons why not to go for RFs? I am interested in purchasing a set of 599m wheels to replace the standard 19s M Sport..

Primary reason to not use runflat on 21" wheels is to eliminate noted "harsh" ride tendency. Especially when you move up to the 21s. Also, the Michelin Pilot Super Sport is one of the highest rated tires out there so to have this available now in non runflat is very different than BMW has done prior to this time. There should be a space for a spare under the rear floor. I have one and would recommend you get one also just in case.

You'll just have to get the BMW f15 space saver spare and install the post that the spare mounts to so that it's not a flying object in a crash.

A side-tracked question, for those of us that planning on upgrades to M Performance Brakes, it seems the space saver spare won't fit (according to literature)... Any alternative spare tire option for this circumstance?

Thanks!

I PZero Pirelli Run Flats. They just came out in x5 staggered setup. Check my thread below for pics. I love these tires and they are probably the best tires for 21" oem staggered setup.

Wondered about that. Hindsight is 20/20, but I ordered the space saver spare knowing I'd want out of the OEM runflats, but I didn't anticipate my passion for the M performance brakes that our now on there. Larger calipers typically are what nullifies the spare option, so I'm wondering if the space will at least be applicable to the rear? Rotors grew as well, but the rears are now probably close in diameter to the standard fronts that came off. I'll just make sure I only encounter nails/flats on the rear tires...I'm 1 for 1 already, getting a nail in the passenger rear the day after I installed the Pilot Super Sports! Slow leak, wasn't a biggie.

My plan moving forward is roadside assistance/flat-bed.

Not sure if I understand your point correctly. You are saying that with M Performance Brakes on, the space saver spare definitely won't fit in front, but still might work in the rear?

Any third-party resource or option as to a larger spare wheel/tire that's big enough to fit the rotor/calipers, but still small enough to fit inside the space-saver wheel compartment?

Yes, I was saying the space saver spare could potentially fit the rear with the M performance brakes since the single piston caliper is much like what comes on the car stock. Generally speaking, it is the large, front calipers on big brake kits that a spare wheel cannot accommodate. Heck, it's hard to find a regular that will clear my Volvo's 6 piston Brembos (granted aftermarket wheels aren't as abundant for Volvos in general).

Not sure of aftermarket spare solutions that will work. I'm open to them since I already coughed up the fancy, carpet lined well that cars without spares have...need to make the spare work!

Thanks! Would appreciate if you can post information up here if you ever find a space-saver type/size spare that fits with the M brakes....

A crazy thought... The space-saver donut might still work if you have a flat front... Just need to replace one of the rear with the donut (assuming the donut works on rear), then install the good rear on the front...

That leaves another question though... if uses a staggered setup, would the staggered rear be able to fit and drivable on the front?

Seriously though... all these complex problems and issues just for a spare tire..... smh......

BMW has a 19" alloy spare wheel as well (standard metal one is 18")

It is listed under all F15 aswell as the new X5M (Part number 36 11 6 775 450)
If it clears the X5M brakes it will clear any other BMW X5 brakes.

Thank you. That sucker isn't cheap, $360 at Tischer before shipping.

The other question is why you want the upgraded brakes. Are you racing? They won't make you stop faster, as your current brakes are more than capable of locking the wheels (if the ABS would allow it). Your stopping distance will not change significantly. Your brakes will stay cooler and fade less, but unless you're doing heavy towing or road racing you shouldn't be encountering brake heat problems.

I'm not saying don't do it, just know that you're getting good looks but won't see a change in brake performance for normal driving, or even "spirited" driving unless you shelled out for some seriously sticky rubber.
