Hi,

I have a Alpin Weiss 40e with M-sport and black 491 wheels. Otherwise it's white and black, except grilles, so I really want to change grilles to black ones. Have anyone done this with night vision? The accessory catalogue says MPerformance grilles do not fit if car has the night vision, but when I have looked it, they should fit with some small modification? I mean dremeling.

Just did mine last night. Admittedly my technique was not the best -- I just yanked 'em out. Broke tabs off, but I wasn't planning on keeping them. The black grills look so much better than the silver.

Hi guys, I have a 2014 F15 M body and planning to replace the front bumper to F85. Can anyone tell me if this is a direct fit or modification will be required. Thanks

Is the f15 and the f85 grille the same size? My f10 was. I also wanted to have the double rib black with chrome trim. Any thoughts?
I also just pulled out my f10 grilles to replace. Didn't use microfiber towels and cut my knuckles.

Yes, they are the same.
F15/F16/F85/F86 are using the same kidney grill. Only different badging on the F85/F86.

Just knocked this out in 30 min. Pretty decent write ups. Only thing I would definitely foot stomp is to remove the plastic air intake guide. Mine didn't have any screws in it but just pushed in via red rubber grommets. This combined with pull the bumper forward Gave me enough room to get a finger on all tabs and push them with one hand while pulling on the grill with the other hand.

I also pulled out the new grills and referenced exactly where the tabs are and utilizing my iPhone in video mode I could see where I needed to put my finger. I found the bottoms easiest with just my fingers as not enough room for a screw driver for me. I used a short fat screw driver for the side and top clips.

Thanks again all!

I want to replace the chrome kidney grills with the black as well. What site do you recommend that i purchase from? I want them to fit properly, but i would like to avoid overpaying as well.

Picked up mine shipped from a local dealer for $150 which included shipping.. I’d check around and see if you can find them locally. Otherwise I think getbmwpats.com is frequently recommended for oem parts and good prices.

My install experience and advice...

Find the post from LJX*****N Feb, 2014 that lists out steps 1- 10. Those steps are great, however, I would like to add the following:

You should strive to remove the shiny chrome outerpiece (frame?) first, and then the actual grill piece. The tabs for the chrome frame piece were easier to get to and work with, because they are bigger and they move easily.

So, start from the top, then sides, then bottom. Press each of the tabs inward. Use something non-scratching (rubber kitchen spatula?) to keep the whole bumper out while you work. Also something to keep the chrome piece pried out so it doesn't go clicking back into place. Don't worry if you break one or two of these tabs, unless you plan to re-use the original piece.

Once the silly chrome frame piece is off and out of the way, you can then see the little grey plastic tabs holding the rest of the grill to the vehicle's bumper. These tabs are much more sturdy and smaller then the other tabs, and I can see why they cause so many problems. So, use a flat head screw driver to press the tabs. Access the tabs both from the front of the grill and from behind the grill with the screwdriver. You have to kind of work the tabs loose from both sides. Have someone applying gentle pressure pulling the grill while you press the tabs outward, so you know when each tab has been freed. Be patient here... don't pull the grill too hard or get too aggressive with the screwdriver that you may harm the vehicle bumper's plastic piece that the tabs go into.. you will need those in good condition for the new grill to fit and seat properly.

All in all.. about 30 minutes, moderate difficulty, for a non-mechanical person. And worth it! The new black grills are beautiful.. they match the other black grill pieces throughout the bumper in the front much better then the silver stock grill.

Thanks for all the info everyone's posted on this!

A question about the grill removal...

If I yank it out, will I break any piece of the interior part of the bumper that'll jeopardize being able to put in the new grill?

I would say if you are just yanking it out, there will always be the possibility of breaking something. Take the extra time and remove it properly. Save yourself any headaches.

That's sounds reasonable, I tried to do the proper method yesterday but was struggling.

I realized I was working on the incorrect clips on the OEM grill by trying to remove the clips that attach the bars to the outside grill border, instead of clips attaching the grill border itself to the bumper. I'll try again today!

What screw are you talking about? I have no screw in mine.

I just installed mine today and I am probably one of the slowest people you will come across when working on my vehicles, as I prefer to ensure everything is done properly. Using the write ups from this thread I was able to install the grills in about 25-30 minutes and that's with me taking 8-10 minutes to figure out exactly how the clips work so that I could ensure I wouldn't break anything. I did use a flat head for the top clips/side clips and then was able to reach my hand down in between the bumper piece that was loosened by removing the 5 screws and undo the bottom three clips relatively easily. The clips kind of make a creaky/clicking noise when you are undoing them. I would say, don't be afraid to pull the bumper piece forward a couple of inches. Obviously, you don't want to yank on it, but it moves pretty easily and you can definitely gain enough room to stick your arm into the opening and reach the bottom clips.

Was finally able to get it done.

25-30 min is impressive! Took me about an hour. Tried my best to not break the clips but unfortunately, ended up breaking one of the bottom clips on each grill. I wasn't planning on reverting back to it but would have liked to have had it available.

Definitely appreciate everyone's shared experiences and advice!

the more I think of it covertstyle in your defense you're located somewhere with a much colder climate. My x5 has always been in Texas. I would argue that over time the extreme cold would cause the plastic to become a bit more brittle and possibly even stuck in place much tighter. You probably did pretty good to only break one clip. Your ride is looking great btw!

Thanks t04d! That's a great point and certainly makes sense. The clips weren't very pliable and there wasn't much "give" to the grill appendages. Makes me kind of jealous for the warmer climate like what you have t04d, especially since my next project is to do a chrome delete of the door trims with vinyl wrap

That was a super easy install. 20min tops. Hopefully the springs and front reflectors go as smoothly this weekend.
