S Drive
Anyone here with an S drive? What is the general opinion of 2 WD vs AWD?
How many of you would prefer AWD to S Drive?

For me the reason to get sDrive is save gas, but I don't understand why people buy 2wd SUVs thinking about saving gas.

I did got an sDrive since it was the only one that available on the lot the first week the car was launched.
I don't like ordering a car, since the wait time going to kill me and ended up getting another car. But, if there was an xDrive available, I would jump on the AWD.

I don't understand why you would buy an SUV that is not AWD. If you buy it to save gas then you entered the wrong vehicle class, get a Honda Civic and that's it. Of course there are also exceptions to what I said like the post above mine.

There is only 1 mpg difference in fuel economy between the S and AWD, according to the EPA tests. I like rear wheel drive vehicles too, but I would opt for AWD just because it's there.

It depends on where you are driving, including the road conditions and whether area has seasons. If you compare Southern CA to Northern CA dealerships, AWD is less of a unicorn for the ladder with some Manufacturers.
For improved gas mileage, I went xdrive40e route. If individual regularly drives highways for long distances, diesel would be alternative. Last edited by Almaretto; 12-08-2016 at 03:49 PM.. |

An Sdrive would not meet our needs.

I wouldnt mind owning the sDrive, especially living further south than Sweden. Its not the 4WD taking you places in a SUV, but rather the ground clearance and big wheels with lot of weight on them, providing a decent grip anyway.
Most F15 owners dont get their cars dirty anyway so... And yes, people do care about fuel consumption. Maybe not so much in the US, but in Europe where salaries are lower and gas twice as expensive, people do actually care even in this price class. I remember when I was angry with my F15 diesel and had it for sale, all speculants were just nagging me about the fuel consumption. |

We bought an s-drive because we had been looking for a while and one came up for a fair price with the color combination we were looking for (Mineral white metallic on mocha brown). Being in Houston there is no real need for 4wd. I would say at least half if not more of the x5's I see around here are sdrive. It's not like anyone is taking their x5 off-roading with 20" wheels and low profile tires.

There are 3 X5's in my neighborhood of 82 homes and all are S drives.
If this vehicle had been fwd and not rear then I would have gone with awd. |

Test drove both S drive and X drive, Sdrive launches more fun and faster than Xdrive if you step on the gas pedal hard. If you disable the stability control, you can do a fist tail and drag the rear wheels easily since 100% of the power is transmitted to the rear rather than only 60% with Xdrive, unless you have the DHP (Dynamic Handling Package). Plus you can save a few bucks for other options/packages you like.

For me AWD is not about off roading. It's about traction on turns and launching. Also since the X5 AWD system defaults power 40% fronts and 60% rears, it gives it a sense of a RWD vehicle.

in the Mother Country (Australia, you know, where memes of punching Kangaroos are made...) you can only get the 25d in S. Wonder what my 50i would be like as S drive?! http://www.police.vic.gov.au/content...ument_id=32184
Good reason not too have S with a 50i |

I was on the fence when ordering my wife's X5; but I live in So. Cal where it never snows, so I opted for the sDrive which saved me $2000 and hopefully more savings at the gas pump.

Living in the MidWest where we do get snow, ice, and icy/rain mix, AWD is the only way to go. I will not purchase any vehicle going forward that is NOT AWD.
