Picked up a 2017 x50i with 73k on the odometer. I am a gambling man.

Hi folks, just wanted to share our recent purchase. A realtor must of lived in this vehicle to put 73k miles on it in such a short time. It's running great, very highly optioned out - and the corona special sealed the deal. My wife and I are both tall, have two kids under 3yrs old, and a 60lb dog. My wife's 2016 VW golf wagon was a nice little car, but just wasn't large enough. I also wanted to give our 2010 535 Wagon a break from family hauling.

With this many miles on the odometer, I am sure something fairly expensive will come up for service soon. Our plan is to drive it for 30-50k miles, or until we're out of car seats. We only put 8-10k on our main car each year, so this'll be a blast.

Shopping around for a service contract right now - any suggestions? Signed up for CarShield just for the interim.

Other cars in the garage:

78k miles on the 2010 535

this one didn't last long, fun wagon just too small

Here's the survivor. 10+ years owned 1999 Z3 M Coupe - 170k miles of fun.

mrfochon I updated the first post with a few more shots of the z3m. If it didn't cost a fortune I'd have every car as green over tan.

Funny thing - the x5 purchase is intended for my wife to primarily drive it, but she may take over the 2010 wagon. It has wireless carplay in it as well

There's a nice thorough 'service menu' on this forum on what you should expect at this mileage. You can diy most of it.

Congrats on the car, 50i is a good choice for this mini tank! We have two in our household and not a single issue so far (knock on wood)

Nice pickup! I'm at 103k on my 50i. Did coils and plugs a few months ago, and also had the infamous PCV lines go bad. Replaced those easily enough. Other than that, she's been good to me. My main advice would be to change the oil much more often than BMW recommends and monitor oil level and add as needed. So far, I've been very lucky with oil consumption. I run Rotella T6 5-40 and use less than a quart in 5k miles, which is when I change it.

That’s awesome to hear about the mileage you have on you vehicle with basically zero issues !! To the OP good luck with your x5 you will love the torque of the 50i! Also beautiful m coupe you have there , I see it looks like your running a m50 manifold off a 95 m3 as I did the same on my 97 m3 4 dr / 5 speed .

I have 152,000 miles on my 50i with the original N63 engine. The N63TU in yours will give you just as many miles and more with the improvements on the TU version of the engine, just be ready for coils, plugs, and CCV tubes in the next 20-30k miles. If possible, avoid city driving/stop and go. Engine compartment heat is what wears everything out so quickly with the N63 and all variants.

Also recommend using liqui moly 5-40 oil and their Mos2 additive. The recommended oil From BMW is to thin and done as for priority of mileage & emissions, not engine life.

Plus one on the liquid moly that’s what I used the last time I changed my oil.

Great find! It's a twin of mine, at least on the exterior. I'm at 43K miles and literally nothing has ever malfunctioned or needed fixing.

Had Blackstone Labs analyze my oil at the last change, and it had held up really well in its 8700 miles and showed every sign of an engine in great health.

As others have pointed out, if you're not afraid of turning a wrench, there's plenty of routine maintenance that you can DIY. Plugs and coils are easy-peasy. Ditto for oil changes and air filters.

Congrats on the purchase. Just picked up a 2017 x50i myself with just over 25k miles on it. Hoping to get some good life out of it without too much trouble. My buddy is a mechanic at the BMW down the street so hopefully I'm not having to see him more than usual.

Did he have any warnings before you bought it?

Haha, yes, as a matter of fact he did. He said not to buy it. Says they come in way too often with problems and advised against the purchase.

Nice, where is this service menu you speak of? I couldn’t find it. I guess the other model bmws also share this platform and will have some insight. Bootmod3 and downpipes is tempting if I decide to skip any type of warranty extension.

I can turn a wrench (see other two cars), but I fear gaskets will be done by a shop when they’re needed. Fluids are also easy to do, but the cost difference is minimal and they usually look vehicle over which is nice.

Lol, the wagon needs injectors I think to handle full throttle acceleration with its mhd tune, but if my wife drives it primarily I may go back to stock and raise it up more (on coil overs ).

The handling dynamics of the x5 is so impressive. I’ve thanked two of my friends and neighbors for building them (engineers at the plant).

Which liqui moly is the best to use in your opinion?

The Leichtlauf High Tech 5W-40 is the best IMHO, Here is a link:
https://www.amazon.com/Liqui-Moly-23...s%2C201&sr=8-2

Also add 1.5 cans of the Mos2 Additive: https://www.amazon.com/Liqui-Moly-20...0986113&sr=8-1

You will notice an immediate improvement engine smoothness. When adding the Mos2, first add 5 liters of oil, then the 1.5 cans of Mos2, then top off with 3 more Liters of oil. Your oil level should be fulll or very near it after.

Here are some pics of my engine when I took it down to the the notorious valve stem seals & cleanup all the carbon buildup, the bearing and cylinder surfaces look excellent for an engine with 148K miles on it at the time. Leakdown test had all cylinders at 5% or less.

Is this bmw approved oil? The extended warranty sold by my dealer (it's their product) stipulates that maintenance needs to be done on a regular basis using approved products. My x6 50i is at 42k miles (last oil change at dealer at 38k miles), under hood says to use 0w-30 which is what I used in my wifes x5 50i. I know the 40 is more viscous than the 30 which I've read is excellent oil... i guess I need some good arguments since my 5k oil change is due in about 800 miles.

I do know it's BMW Longlife-01 approved. I assume that's what they mean?

Yes it is a bmw approved oil that’s why I used also cause I was concerned with it still being under warranty.

As the other members mentioned it's LL-01 approved and meets and exceeds all BMW specifications. With that being said, I would still confirm with your dealer that services your car that it will in no way shape or form void your warranty, especially since you mentioned this is the dealers warranty and not factory BMW so the dealer has the right to make up whatever rules they want to. Since it's approved by BMW it should not but get it confirmed first directly with them so they don't try to use it as an excuse should you ever need to use the warranty...dealers make much more from out of pocket then from warranty so the temptation is there...
