Trailer wiring harness removal

I'm in the process of swapping my 2014 X5 for a 2017 X5. I'd like to keep my execuhitch and wiring harness to save the additional expense of new hardware. The hitch removal is not a problem. The harness on the other hand a bit more challenging but ultimately doable.

Where I ran into issues is that once the harness and controller are disconnected the car displays a "Trailer Hitch: Stop Carefully" message asking that I contact a service centre. The condition also prevents the trunk lid from opening using the driver door button stating that the trailer is connected and lid must be opened manually.

I've decoded the camera zoom but there must obviously be other parameters that get coded when the harness is first installed. Has anyone done this successfully or knows what else needs to be decoded to prevent the above error message from popping up?

Once I reconnect the harness and controller everything returns to normal.

OBD scan revealed no error codes.

Thanks

I'd just let the dealer deal with it. I'm sure they can easily reprogram it before they put it on the lot. I would not let them charge you, either.

Certainly an option although I do not want to create an opportunity for them to charge me. I've read somewhere that unplugging the battery and then removing the harness may trigger an appropriate reset once the battery is reconnected. Thoughts?

Nope. Disconnecting either/both of the batteries did not reset the trailer warning, it only reset the time.

The warning will not go away till the trailer lights control unit is removed from VO. You also need to remove it from the vehicle once you take the wiring out.
