Rear Door Opens While Driving (By Itself!!!)
So 2x over the weekend, the rear passenger door unlocked and opened by itself. I got the door ajar warning and you could hear the latch un-release.
Happened to be turning left at the time. Car is subject to rear door recall. Not sure if that fixes it... |

Question for you folks: If a car was manufactured during the applicable period for this recall, but the car was purchased from a dealer after the recall was announced, I would think that the dealer would've fixed the issue? Or is that a bad assumption?

This just happened to me on the front passenger side over the weekend. Freaked me out. Of course I cannot replicate it in front of the dealer.

So, do you have the premium package? This includes the soft close automatic doors. Since it's a recall, it should be easy to fix - take it back and they have to fix it, regardless if it opened or not.
I think I'll call my dealer and check...

Yes. It is official and I have the notice. But from what I understand it only applies to the rear doors. Not the front ones. It was an issue with manufacturing tolerances and the child locks such that you could still open even if child lock "armed".
I am not sure the recall addresses spontaneous door openings while driving... |

Sure glad I didn't go with the soft close doors. Even after the recall fix, its definitely a little concerning that the doors could just 'open'. Not safe, especially with little ones in the back seat.

This is nearly the ultimate liability issue you could have - your door opens on its own, even while in motion. I would bet BMW would fix the front or back doors if this happens, or if its a recall. A half-assed attorney would win this lawsuit.

+1 rear door ajar warning in HUD and instrument cluster today. June build with premium pkg. Strangely enough the door was still locked when I got out the car. I do have the auto lock while driving feature enabled.

Comforting to have discovered this thread. This happened to me twice in the last two weeks.
My issue is with the front driver side door. It opened by itself while turning right at a signal. Freaked me out. Will call the dealer in the morning. |

Do you have soft close doors? What's the production date or week?

Goodness.... I'll be taking the X5 on her maiden shakedown road trip up north (about 300km) ... wouldn't want to have to worry about any door popping open along the way!

Based on earlier report, they don't really swing open, they just uncouple but still remain held closed by the latch.
