TPMS malfunction with new wheels

Bought a set of OEM wheels complete with tires and sensors, bolted them on myself and tried to reset the TPMS. Can’t get it to go past 0%. Wife takes the car in for its yearly service and let’s them know. Dealership supposedly recalibrated the sensors but I wasn’t there and told her she needs to drive to reset it which they should’ve done imo while she waited. Now during reset it goes to 49% and then says TPMS malfunction.

Any tips instead of taking it back to them which is an inconvenience?

I have the exact same problem after putting them on my x6. The problem is they are chinese made counterfiets. Can’t get past 0%, stuck there for about 10 min then tpms malfunction error comes up.
I bought the same chinese crap and put them on my wife’s x5 where they registered BUT get the tpms malfunction message after a while. The message comes and goes.

If you cheaped out like me and didn’t pay $400+ for an oem set then likely that’s the problem.
If yours are oem, I’d also like to know why you’re having the problem. Then I might have hope for mine.

I run "cheap" tpms and have no issues. They're not all crap.

The tires and wheels I bought were supposedly off a CPO x5 and driven home 15miles. I bought them from another forum member. Assuming that’s true and I have no reason not to believe him, I’d have to assume the sensors are OEM

Did you get your x5 up to higher speed when trying to reset?

Did you drive the car after you started the reset? You need to start the reset process while in P but then you need to drive around for about 5 minutes to sensors reset.

Started it in park, then she drove 20 min at variable speed up to 50mph. 49% and then malfunction message. Tire pressures have Ben checked manually

I have been selling "cheap" tpms that BMW and other European car manufacturers used, minus their logos, and it has been a major success.

You are paying $100/sensor is because of the copyright lawyers that they have to pay monthly, lol.

How old are the TPMS in the wheels?
It could be the battery is dying.

Do you have squared 19's even though they're a squared setup some shops get careless and can't tell the rears have a different offset to the front and flip flop the wheels which will cause the tpms to malfunction. On a side note I've been using Ben's "cheap" tpms for 3 of my cars on winter sets for 2 years and have had no issues

Wheels came from a 2017 x5 so I’m assuming sensors are the same year.

The car came with squared 19s. The wheels I put on that are having issues are 469 staggered 20s

I don't know if it matters, but are the tires at the right pressures? Maybe resetting is aborted if pressures are low.

Hmm, tough one there.
Not sure if AutoZone have a scanner that you can borrow to check the TPMS battery status.

Wordt case scenario, you can code it off so it won't bother you much with the warning messages.

I believe with TPMS error, you can't even drive on a sport mode.

Running 36 up front and 41 in the rear as stated in the manual and checked with a gauge and they are good.

We have an appointment at the dealer next week so they should get it fixed just didn’t want to wait. Sport mode works fine as I was zippin around in it today.

You have a discount tire nearby? They've checked tpms sensors for me. They just hold their little computer next to the tire.

We don’t but we have other tire shops. We need to go to the dealer anyway so I’ll just wait I guess. Don’t really want to waste more time on this if I don’t have to

So SA at bmw is telling me that the sensors from the wheels and tires I put on are for another car and cannot be reprogrammed. That doesn’t seem accurate to me.

Recap. I had squared 19” 467 rims with good year tires. I swapped them for staggered 20” 469 rims and continental tires. Bought the set complete with tires already mounted and sensors in the wheel so I just bolted on the new wheels and then tried to reset the TPMS and received a malfunction. New 469 wheels came from a CPO x5 of the same year as mine and sensors worked fine on that car.

Is it possible that that car used different type of sensors than my car of the same year uses? The car the wheels came from was an Sdrive and mine is an Xdrive. Would that matter?
