X5 M50d Spotted in the U.S. (Update: Imposter)

It looked like the real McCoy. I don't want to be a snoop but I know the area well and may run into it again, if I don't troll the neighborhood (joke ends).

Man I want one so bad! You think its a personally owned vehicle? If so, how can you get one in the U.S.?

Based on the plates, it looks like a euro speced X5 shipped to the USA.. maybe he/she moved and brought their car over as well.

I kinda thought something like that but didnt want to assume. Is there a way for us to order and M50d and have it shipped here?

It was clearly bought in Germany. The under plate is a German one for export. I think you can buy it from any country in eu and then get it shipped in the US.

There is something even more rare in my picture. Rain on my hood.

Almost every BMW around me is from one of two dealers who put their frames around the plates. This one has none, and could be another clue as to its provenance (not from here)

Best, if possible, would be to order from Europe and ask for US Delivery. But I am sure they have a 20 page procedure manual that forces you to export it first.

Hard to tell from the pic but a couple of things makes me think its a imposter...

M50D badge looks crooked
Exhaust tips doesn't look like they are black
Wheels looks like regular 469M from the pic

Is there a legitimate reason why BMW hasn't been selling these over here? It's not like they don't already sell X5 diesels.

I suspect its because most Americans would rather get the 50i since its cheaper and faster. MPG isn't as important here since our gas is cheap compared to the rest of the world.

I suspect due to the higher number of torque, US neck is not strong enough to support it and BMW doesn't want to get sued due to a whiplash.

I've seen two that were test mules driving around Jersey. One on the highway and another one parked in Hoboken for a while. I can't say with 100% certainty they were the 50D but they were definitely new engines in the F15 body. Ill see if my girlfriend still has the pictures of the one on the highway. You could see it was partially camouflaged and had tons of computer equipment all over the dash.

Good eyes.

I will look for this thing...it is within a 1/4 mile radius of me, where there are about 50 other F15s, but no other one with a rack and an m50d badge. I'll try to snap a picture of the brakes at minimum......also, looks like no badge on the side.

I think the badge may look crooked because of the reflection .......
469M are a cost option on the M50d in Germany it actually comes standard with 19" 467

Either way the chrome tips looks like a dead giveaway. I see so many eBay sellers selling the m50d badge and I guess this person was a customer lol

Alanl I actually bought a set from eBay. I wanted to cannibalize it and make my own custom badge: 'X5d'. Wifey (it is her car) opposed.

Also, the ones from two eBay sellers were not chrome and more of a titanium matte finish.

The giveaway is the Chrome exhaust tips as you well spotted.

I'll run into the car sooner or later.....based on where I spotted it first, it has to be walking distance from me.

I don't buy the import route. It is next to impossible to import cars to USA that were not specifically certfied for US emissions and dont' have US emissions sticker.

Certifying costs a lot which is why not all cars i.e. small production supercars can be brought to USA (think of Porsche 959 that Bill Gates has).

I have friends in Japan who tried hard to take their NSX Type R and other JDM cars back to USA when they relocated and just gave up.

Roof rails are not black and the exhaust tips are not black either, they should be on a M50d? Also no M sport badge on front guard and no side skirts.

Its also debatable they are 20" wheels as they are not wide enough to be 315's

And finally the M badge on the rear is to far from the X5 badge and the 5 and 0 are to close together as is the d.
