iDrive Display will not turn on!

My relatively new (at least to me) 2014 X5 iDrive display will not turn on. I quickly ran out for lunch and the display was just blank. No boot screen, nothing. The radio and Heads up Display are functioning as expected (as are parking sensors).

I got to my destination for 5 minutes and got back in my car and drove 5 minutes and still did not come back. I read another thread regarding holding the volume button down for 30 seconds so it resets but that was for a 5 series. Is there another "reset" type of functionality. These kinds of electronics failures concern me on such an expensive car. For what it's worth I took it out all weekend into the city and had no issues with the display. Another point to note is its really hot today and the display may have been out in the sun but again, I would not think that would be an issue?

Take it to the dealership, as you are still under warranty.

Let your car sleep for 20 minutes and see if the computer reboots. The blank screen is a common problem and typically resolves itself after shutting off the car and restarting.

I will only take it to the dealership if I know it is a continuing problem. Of which does not seem to be the case with electronics on a BMW (not always repeatable or self-correcting).

I'll see what happens when I get in my car in a couple hours. Hopefully it is back. As KZang mentioned I was not aware this is a common problem since it was my first time.

So just got in my car after it was sitting for over 3 hours and the display still won't turn on. Strange that the entertainment with radio and heads up works. The command feature to use navigation is also working and can see the directions on the heads up. It's just the display that won't work.

Any other suggestions?!?

Yup take it to the dealer. I had my dash go out after 2 weeks ownership and mine was brand new with 3 miles on the odo. It happened twice but both times it fixed itself after a restart. Last week I brought my car in for repairs due to my steering wheel not adjusting up and down. I had to have my adjustment switch replaced due to faulty switch and reprogram the car due to the dash going out.

For what it's worth, turned on my car this morning and the screen started up normally. I almost wish it didn't so the issue could be diagnosed better. I will keep an eye on it and hopefully it doesn't happen again. It is concerning though if I have to go on a long ride and need the Navi and reverse camera that it may not work.

Take it in.. the techs can run diagnostics and see that it is faulty.

I believe they are two different sleep cycles. One is 17 minutes long. And one is much longer. It appears this feature resets with the longer cycle. There are also threads about the cycle being impacted by how you lock and unlock the car (key fob or touch), were key is able to do more.....I have never experience this however.

The dealer will believe you. I also have a habit of taking pictures or videos of anomalies, which I have used to show the problem, but never because I was challenged (with BMW).

There is an option to turn off the display, are you sure that we get it used?

If not, you go back in the trunk and develop several screws and disconnect the battery for 10 minutes and try again!

If so becomes, write it dead!
