M Performance Brake Kit installed

Hey Guys,

Installed my M Performance Brake Kit over the weekend. I mentioned it another thread, but I opted for the same basic setup that Alan did, MPBK w/ F85 front rotors. Only change on my setup was that I opted for pads from Carbotech for a lower dust option. I'll keep you posted on how they are, my OEM pads would barely show any dust after 2 weeks of driving. I don't expect that same low dust performance, but anything is better than the BMW M pads (have them on our E82...black wheels after 3-4 days). I know Alan posted pics of the comparison on stock to the MPBK. The sheer size and rotor surface area is a substantial upgrade, its impressive. Pricing I got on the kit and pads (bought separately) put me at just over $4,800 including taxes. My dealer credited me back full retail for the front rotors and the pads (front/rear). Pretty good bang for the buck in my opinion for this upgrade.

I hit a few snags along the way, but other than that, the install was fairly easy. I bled them twice, pedal feel is now back close to stock, but still 'soft' in my opinion. The vehicle goes into my local dealer for coding tomorrow. I'll keep you posted on the performance following coding. Initial performance feedback once I bedded the pads is great, solid braking with amazing looks.

Unfortunately, I chipped the paint on the passenger side front caliper when bleeding. Some choice words were said at the time. I'll be looking to touch that up ASAP, its minor, but I know its there and my eye is drawn to it.

The issues I had during installation were:

-Passenger side rear H&R spacer was seized on (guess I was stingy with my anti-seize when I installed them). Took some heat and creative prying to get it to come loose.
-The Carbotech Pads for the rear, one set had the backing clip that seats into the piston on the outer pad, not the inner. Had to break the rivet and install on the correct pad and punch the rivet to lock it in place.
-Front caliper brass retainer clips for the pads were contacting the outer/top face of the rotor. When I assembled them, I had put the clips on upside down. Flipped them around and problem solved.
-Hex rotor retainer bolts (34111123072) do not sit flush to rotor hat. These are the ones that apparently show correct for the F85 rotor, I've got my dealer looking into it. Not a major issue, I removed them prior to spacer/wheel install.

Once you get the car coded the pedal feel will be better than stock. Can't wait to hear your before and after coding impressions because so many people discount the fact that coding MPBK is required.

MPBK is still one of the best mods for the F15. The braking and feel improved DRAMATICALLY.

are you going to install matching rotors for the rear or going to remain solid rear and holes in front?

No plans as of now to upgrade to F85 rotors in the rear, but I may opt for this down the road. In all honesty, I'd rather spend $500 on something else.

I have the complete "kit" sitting in my garage along with a second set of F85 rotors but now on the fence about keeping the X5 longer... I have been debating if a few minor "mods" would sway me to keep it. If I do I am uncertain which way to go regarding install. The mismatch would annoy the hell out of me but the screw/hub situation would as well.

My problem with MPBK is the hellish squeaking noise every time I hit the brake pedal at various speeds like for around 5 to 10 seconds, its driving me nuts, I really do regret in purchasing this kit not to mention the enormous price I'd spent on shipping 270 Lb kit through Fedex.
What a bummer!!

^^ you should try taking it back to the shop to see if they can add some more anti-squeal paste on the pads to see if it helps. All high performance brakes make noise. Just the nature of having big brakes. My old MPBK use to squeal slightly on very low speeds but didn't bother me. My now X5M has almost the same brakes but they are 6pistons instead of 4 and they also make noise. The stopping power is phenomenal though and I will gladly take the noise.

Appreciate your swift responce, my vehicle is due for its 3rd service in about 1k, so I will definitely address this matter to the SA in order to apply the anti-squeal and hopefully my dilemma will be over or at least is reduced a bit.

Definitely partly a function of the pads. My Carbotech pads have been good so far, I've got about 120 kms on the kit already. Only heard a slight squeal/squeak when grabbing a coffee this morning in the drive-thru (at very slow speed). Our E82 M Sport still has the OE brakes and they are brutal for dust/squealing. After a wash, they're good for about a day, and then begin to squeal again at every stop. When I was at my BMW dealer last week, they have a service bulletin specifically advising customers that BMW brakes are prone to noise.

I might consider swapping my pads to Carbotech, since its a win/win situation in regards to brake dust & squealing.

No problem. My only other piece of advice if you go with the Carbotech pads is to paint the mounting plates for the pads black, as they come red. Do this at least for the rear - since it shows the most. I didn't bother painting the fronts since I just wanted to get things buttoned up and was too impatient to paint and let dry. You can't really seem them once installed anyways.

**UPDATES**

Picked up my X5 this afternoon from the dealer, all coded, pedal feel is much stronger than prior to coding, and have driven about 50 kms since pick up. Apparently the coding raises the pressure in the "vacuum accumulator", and thus alters pedal feel and effort. Very happy customer with these brakes. Now, to find touch up paint that will be a close match to the blue calipers.

Glad you are happy with them. You are now the second person on the forum that can back me up about how these brakes feel way better after coding. Most people scrub it off like it's not possible since its mechanical part but it does. Night and day difference with coding.

do some e-searching and see what comes but G2 probably makes a kit if not there are plenty of people who will mix a custom color high heat paint for you but it will most likely be $50-75.

Braking performance is phenomenal, almost to the point where I forget I'm driving a vehicle of this size. The kit has definitely upped the "fun" factor for me in driving this X5.

How did you go from $2750 to $4800 if that was your starting point? OEM X5M rotors are listed at $173.51 at getbmwpart.com What am I missing?
