I Learned a Very Valuable Lesson Today

DON'T TAKE ON AN X5M UNLESS YOU HAVE PRACTICED USING LAUNCH CONTROL FIRST!!! Not that it would've mattered, I would've got spanked either way, just not by as many car lengths as I embarrassedly did!!!)

Ahem, so I left base early today (to beat the Airshow traffic) and ran across another X5 which happened to be a true X5M leaving base at the same time. Similar color, I believe he had the Donnington Grey colorway. So, I was intrigued and wanted to say hello to a fellow X5 driver and the stupid "kid" in me decided to issue a challenge for a race. Of course he accepted, I'm assuming because there aren't that many X5's rolling around here and it was a good time for him to prove why the M Badge should not be taken for granted (like slapping it on the exterior of any true non-M Bimmer!)

Long story short, I got smoked...twice. But it was all in good fun and I learned that I need to take some more time and get my LC technique down pat! So, if you were driving the DG X5M today (9 June 17) leaving SAFB and you distinctly remember seeing a SG X5 50i in your rear view mirror...LESSON LEARNED!!!

LOL!!!

depending how long the distance was at one point (60 mph+), he'll pull even harder on you. Racing from a dig should be close for like 4 seconds, then it'll feel like you're standing still.

From time to time, on the highways, I do romp on my M3 doing 60+ runs (not racing anyone), and the cars that try to keep pace that was on my butt looks like a speck in my rear mirror in 3 seconds or less. From time to time, I see some other car try to keep up, but it literally takes them 4-5 seconds AFTER I've slowed down for them to catch up to me.

Top end pull on M cars is no joke either. On turbo M motors, turbos are designed to continue to deliver for top end power, and on NA M cars, most of the power is on the top end by design.

Agreed! I've done the same and noticed how fast those cars behind me tend to disappear, but I witnessed a WARP FACTOR in comparison to what my 50i is capable of! Oh well, again, it was all in good fun as I knew I couldn't hold down the fort for long!

Damn these X5's are addictive!!!

Both my Wife and I are Retired USAF, plus she's a GS now (and my sugar Momma while I finish my MBA).

Scott is having an Air Show this weekend as part of its 100 year celebration. Today was open only for DoD ID card holders. We live about 10 mins from base and I could've sit in my backyard and watched them flyby, but they had an F-35 on display and I couldn't miss that!

My RID gives me access to pretty much any DOD Installation (Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps). I keep my BX/PX/NEX and Commissary privileges for life.

Being a member of the Blue Card Crew has its advantages.

My age??? What, do you think I hangout at the Mortician's office everyday? I've only been retired for 4 years.

And besides, education/knowledge have no age restrictions.

I can say that over 20 years of moving from base to base (both CONUS & OCONUS) we've only had one entertainment center broken (and it was on its last leg when by the time of that particular move).

And there's more to Scott than just the TMO.

SDDC is enough to make me hate Scott. That and the proximity to St. Louis.

Hope you're using your GI Bill. Olin? If you were enlisted, you're at least 42ish. Officer, 46ish. ROI on an MBA is low at those ages, though better if you have benefits like YRP.

Well, I'll agree with you on the prox to ESTL & STL. I try not go into downtown STL for any reason if I can help it. It's the Wild Wild West over there and no one is safe, Man, Woman or Child.

You better believe it! Without that GI Bill, I don't know how I could've got my Bachelors let alone enroll for my MBA. I've only got 4 more classes and that's it!

I hope your lesson learned isn't that if you get your launch control down better that you would have a chance in that situation. Even with a good launch, you would still get spanked. There is a reason it is considered a completely different model, more expensive, more power, more performance, etc. When I saw the original thread title and started reading, I thought it was going to be another story about turning off DSC and the inevitable disaster that ensues. Good that it wasn't that.

Well he said "Not that it would've mattered, I would've got spanked either way" so I think he's pretty clear on that.

Not to get off topic, I'm 43, starting my 4th class in my MBA program.

So far, it all basically sucks. But I'm learning a lot. And my focus will compliment my business, so I'm hoping the ROI is there. Either way, I've got a few customers that have been impressed, so there are residual benefits.

Back on topic, once I get this program done, x5m for me. No question about it.

It wasn't intended as a knock. I hope it didn't come off that way. I'm starting full time at a pretty great program this fall but even at my age (younger than both of you salty dogs) I would have a hard time justifying moving and pursuing it if GI Bill and YRP didn't make it basically free in comparison to full tuition.

If you're using it to complement an existing business you have a good chance at it being the best choice you ever made. It's harder if you're older and are looking to break into a new career.

I took it as a joke, hence the "mortician" comeback.

It's not all that hard, with the exception of all the writing that is involved. Most of the MBA program (from my POV) is simply a more in-depth rehash of undergraduate studies. I'm not looking to make a gain from obtaining my MBA, although it should give me more doors to open once finished, I'm doing it more as a personal goal.

I never thought I was smart enough to make it in College when I graduated HS, hence my Enlistment in the USAF. To be totally honest, I really don't think the young me would've had the patience of the old me to put the effort into my studies. Like you stated, the GI Bill takes a lot of the punch out of Undergrad and Grad studies.

So as I see it....only one option; immediately and without thought of consequence, trade in your X5 50i for a M model, mod it as required, find the guy so that you can spank him and earn your dignity back.

I'm sure your wife will understand.

Ha. Not at all. I wonder everyday if this is worth all the effort. And damn, I hope it pays off. It should. It definitely should. But time will tell
