2017 first oil change?

So during my last visit to the dealership, (under 4000 miles) at the time. I was told to come back at 5k for the free oil change. Now, i can't find any documentation on where it says i should do the oil change, even the car says it should be at 10k. I just hit 5k and was wondering what the right thing to do is.
Couldn't find anything on the forum.

If your car is a lease, I would just go by the recommend interval and do annual changes or every 10K miles for free. If you purchased your car, the choice is yours and if it helps you sleep better at night, go ahead with oil changes every 5k miles. However, it will be on your own dime and there is no proof the car will last any longer compared to a car at 10k mile intervals.

It is 10k or one year.

Are you coming up on a year of ownership?

- I changed it @ 2,000 miles by myself
- total time spent - 30 minutes
- total cost under $70 (w/ filter)
- ideally next oil change - 6,000 miles then dealer does the annual or 10K free service.

I want to keep this vehicle for 7 to 10 years ...

Why did you change your oil at 2k miles?

I love oil threads

Rumor is metal particles from break in period are at the max during first 3k miles or so. So many people change it for a piece of mind. This was debated to death, but still no 100% scientific answer. Probably truth is that it wouldn't hurt to change oil early, even if modern engines have come a long way from 70's and even if there is virtually no metal shavings in oil or very minimal amount that doesn't affect anything. I say let people change it if that gives them a good night sleep. After all, sleep pills are often more expensive than a simple extra oil change

I also tend to agree that on turbo engines changing oil 10k miles is a bit too long imho. Especially if you like to push it a little sometimes. BMWs are notorious for higher working engine temperature (efficiency and performance) and 2 turbos - all this can use some shorter periods, maybe 6-7k miles. Of course if you are leasing - majority won't care, but those who financed new or bought CPO - they tend to keep cars a bit longer

P.S. You 35i guys are lucky. 50i engines are notorious for oil degradation and consumption - probably one of the most demanding engines in terms of oil change intervals and oil quality. I don't want to pay $20k for a new engine due to any issues with oil (hello rod bearings)

Yup, that's right ...

I changed oil @ 2K miles,
- for $70.00 & 30 minutes, it won't hurt.
- familiar with new chassis
- don't believe synthatic old can be used for 10K miles range
- I tend to keep this vehicle for 7 to 10 years (at least)

just me ... experience sharing only; doesn't mean I am on the right track ... I could be wrong.
