Dealer asking full MSRP

Hi Folks,

I went to Crevier dealership in Orange county (California) and the sales rep told me that he could place an order for an X5 but it will have to be at full MSRP. He said that the demand for the car is so high that dealers are not offering anything off the MSRP.

This is my first experience buying an upcoming BMW model, so I am not sure if the dealer is right.

Has anybody placed an order in California and managed to get a price less than MSRP or is it pretty common to have to pay MSRP for an upcoming model?

Appreciate any insights.

Try using the Costco auto program or something similar. My local dealer was able to quote me a discounted price on the F15 using the USAA car buying service.

Years ago if paid cash was an incentive to the deal. Than had a
couple of salesmen tell me it did not matter. Either way they
got there money. Whether cash from you or the finance company.

They would rather you finance since make money off you.

??? what is like now

If can wait 6 months probably do better. Once on the lots and not moving as
fast as hope. deals

Back in 2007, they would mark up MSRP $8,000 and call it market adjustment. That was 2-3 months after E70 launch.

Maybe BMW overbuild to exceed demand and will have to discount to start selling x5 off the lot.

No.
Cash or finance, dealer gets their money in the bank.

The dealers prefer that you finance or lease due to "back-end" incentives. They will make more money on a lease/finance transaction vs. a cash transaction.

Wait about six months, and the hysteria will go down. Given the substantial increase in MSRP, discounts will be available after the initial surge is demand slows down.

This is typical bmw dealer tactics for new vehicle launch. Simply there are more customers than production slots allocated.

Best bet is to goto the largest most popular dealer with the most production slots.

... Or wait it out.

Right, cash discounts are long gone unless you have bad credit and can't get the deal financed. Dealers want to run a loan through at the desk because they have to send a certain number of deals to the lenders that finance their inventory and/or want to make the 2%-5% of the amount financed by sending you to certain lenders.

You're often better off going direct to your bank or credit union for financing, even if the dealer tells you he can save you time by running the loan through your bank at the desk. Banks often have different pricing to adjust for the 2%-5% paid to the dealer. Also, the add-on products are big money makers. GAP for instance, goes for $600.00-$800.00 at the dealer where the same coverage can be purchased for less than half that at your bank.

I'm surprised that we have people here wanting the first year model cars...
I can understand people that are clueless that purchase the first models... but we are supposed to be well informed

So true, yet my last three purchases have been first model year cars. Some of us just can't wait and an impulse buy trumps logic

Can't understand why you criticized people for buying first year models, their choices and not thoughtful comment. Do you really believe last year models are pure problem-free quality?

F15 envy. The new one makes the 2013 look ancient, especially the interior.

I would tend to believe that most dealers will be trying to get as close to MSRP as possible (if not full list) for these first few production runs. Since BMW makes so many cars (over 700k E70s produced), I would not worry about this being a long term problem. Unless China has pent up demand for the new X5, I would think that prices will deflate after the initial surge.

Remember, the factory produces vehicles for all over the world and BMW chooses to produce demo vehicles first. Couple that with the fact that the X5 is insanely popular and you have a bit of false demand early on. Once the demo vehicles are on the lots, production will normalize and prices will drop.

If it were me...I'd wait for one model year to pass. Always a few bugs and kinks to work out. I am not interested in being someone's guinea pig!

Best of luck to all who are purchasing the F15...I am looking forward to seeing them in person.

The interior on the new one is basically the same but you've got a few more stitch lines on the seats. It does look nice but that's it really. The buttons etc are all still exactly the same (except i-drive touch dial). I still think the screen in the dash looks way better as well after having a go with the configurator - not just for the screen but for the balance of the whole dash as well.

As for the exterior - anything different will look newer. What it should be is cooler and its not. The back is just plain bad no matter how you dress it up. I wonder what the co designer of the E70 , Pierre Leclercq thinks of the new model. Maybe it's something like this "oh no some idiot has ruined what was a cool design by updating / adding stupid unnecessary changes that don't really fit with the original concept".

Tell me this looks worse than the new model ?

A little condescending, don't you think? I bought both my E90 M3 and F25 X3 during the first year of production and still have both of them. They have both been basically flawless. I used to avoid first year cars, but not any more.

I would tell the SA "screw it. I'm going to buy a Range Rover Sport. Let's see who will have a food on their table".

Have to disagree with you on that. Not that much difference. Ok
they got that tablet stuck on the dash. Otherwise. Same dash
for speedo and tack, couple of gauges moved around. Door lock
to door. Ohhhh that a big one. Dash not a flowing as the E70 but
overall Not that much difference. Seats well different stitching, many
are on the fence as an improvement or just too busy now. Same
back end with different taillights. Front wider headlight pods,
grille tilts forward more but overall not that major of a difference here
even.

Seems like many are grabbing at straws to support a major design change

The interior is a massive improvement over the current car which now looks old, bland and boring. Materials and finish are a big step up. The dash is now wrapped around the driver. The HUD is all color. The driver gauges are digital. A much larger CID which free floats and will give a perception of more space. New trims. It will be a nice place to be.

The exterior .. Well - That's another story.
